Buff on a Budget: Update on My Progress

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

September 14, 2010 By Cherie Lowe

At the beginning of the year, I set out on a journey to be much healthier in 2010.  And I wanted to do it without spending a ton of cash.  I started simple with the Wii Fit that my daughter got for Christmas and using workout DVDs.  I talked about my top tips in the local paper.  I moved on to running in the spring.  I did some biking this summer.  And a few weeks ago, we joined a local church’s fitness center and I’ve found my happy place by running, lifting weights, and taking classes there.  And we’ve spent VERY little (even the family membership was only $100 for the entire year).  Would you like to know what’s happened as a result?

  • I’ve taken a whopping 4 pts off my BMI.
  • I’ve lost over 23 lbs.
  • I’ve run my first Mini Marathon.
  • I rode my bike 120 miles in one day.
  • I finally fit into pre-Youngest Princess clothes again (which saves me even more money).
  • I feel great!
It’s funny because most people probably don’t notice a difference since it’s been a verrrry gradual process.
I’m very addicted to running again and while I haven’t officially registered yet but I’m planning on running another Mini Marathon this fall.  I talk to so many people who say, “I could never run that far.”  If you asked me if I would run that far in September of 2009, I would have laughed. in. your. face.
I’ve talked about Couch to 5K programs before but I strongly encourage you to check one out today. You can even google Couch to 5K podcasts and download one that plays with your music to tell you when to walk and run.  It all starts with one goal.
If you live in the Terre Haute area (or are willing to drive), I strongly encourage you to join our Race for the Cure team which is only a few short weeks away (go here NOW to sign up!).  We’re running to support my wonderful Mother-in-Law Sally who is celebrating 20 years of being a survivor of Breast Cancer.  You can “Rally for Sally” by running or walking a 5K (or a ~1 mile Celebration Walk) and if you raise the most money, Hanes is going to bless you with a gift card!  SUHWEET.
Or if you feel led, please consider making a donation to our team.  We’re seeking to raise $1000 and only have $175 of it thus far.  We’re better together.  Even if you can only donate $1, it will make a difference.
Whether it’s getting in shape, getting out of debt, or changing the world through being generous, you can always start tomorrow.  But why wait?
