Buff on a Budget: Resistance is NOT Futile

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

Weights for BarbellsIt’s the beginning of the month so I thought I’d update you on my overall progress.  The news is not thrillingly phenomenal but it’s not bad so I’m guessing that’s a good thing.  I lost another 2.7 lbs. this month which is not bad considering A) I had another round of bronchitis that rendered me useless in the workout department for about 10 days out of the month. B) It’s a short month. and C) I endured the temptations of Blissdom.  So the BMI is about 1.5 pts from where I started and total weight loss is close to 8 lbs for 2010.  Slow and steady wins the race, whether or paying of debt or losing weight.

The best news is that I continue to feel in shape enough to get in shape.  *heh*.  And the weather is warming which is AWESOME since I’ll get the chance to use my “free” eliptical residing in the non-climate controlled areas of our house (aka the garage).  Soon and very soon I’ll be hitting the road to train for my 5K in May.  WOOT WOOT.  Today, I thought I’d talk a bit more about weight training which is perfect any time of the year, indoor or outdoor.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned the value of owning a pair of good dumbbells (no 1 lbers people, 5 lbs should be your lightest set).  But if you’re not ready to invest just yet or it’s simply not an option for you, consider the following ideas.

  • Lift household items.  Cans of veggies or bottles of water are good for light weights.  A gallon of water weighs about 8 lbs but is kind of awkward to hold.
  • Refill empty containers with sand or rocks.  Consider filling large water bottles (33.8 oz) or even tennis ball cans with rocks or sand.  This only makes sense if you already have the containers and the rocks or sand.  If you have to purchase either of the items merely to make weights, you probably could have purchased weights from Amazon or Walmart for a lower price.  Here’s an article I found about making your own weights.
  • Resistance Bands are also a great way to work out and there are a TON of great exercises you can get out of one of those tubey things.  More on that in a future week.  Plus they’re great for travel, too.  We own this pretty purple one.
Building muscle is GREAT for your body.  It eats the fat and gives you the strength you need.  Don’t be afraid that you’ll bulk up because the truth is you simply won’t.  And the stronger you get, the healthier you’ll feel.  Add some resistance on the cheap and continue to get Buff on a Budget this week!
