Royal Review: Oh Samsung, You Continue to Fascinate Me!

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

January 3, 2011 By Cherie Lowe

Please excuse the formalities.  This is a review post.  I received a Samsung Fascinate for a month and a half to use and enjoy from Verizon Wireless in association with Kyle Communications (holla Lady Michelle, Lady Kyle, and Sir James).  I did not keep this item.  I did not receive any money for this review.  It was not edited by Verizon Wireless, Kyle Communications, Samsung, or any of the Smurfs.  I always give you my honest opinions when I review any item, that’s a Royal Guarantee.  Hello friends from the FTC, can I get on to talking to the Money Saving Lords and Ladies in the Court of the Queen of Free now?

The display size is fab.
My eyes had to readjust when
using my iPod touch.

So you might recall that I had the chance to review the Samsung Galaxy Tablet from Verizon in November.  It was simply all that and a bag of chips (or a Sears Wishbook toy of the year).  For the past month and a half, I’ve had the very fun privilege of using the Tab’s slimmer, smaller cousin the Samsung Fascinate.  Verizon certainly made my holidays happy with this dear little friend.

Not only could I manage my shopping lists with free apps like Our Groceries but I could stay in touch with friends, family, and even Money Saving Lords and Ladies like yourself with the Swype of a finger (seriously Swype is awesome, you drag your finger from letter to letter on the keypad and it reads your mind!).  And the FREE apps available every day in the Android Market rock my world.  Cardio Trainer is my new best friend, Angry Birds owned me for awhile, YouTube saved my rear while waiting with the Youngest Princess more than once, and the Pandora Glee Cast Holiday Station was played in abundance all December long.  Plus the ability to use the Mobile Hotspot (which you can pay for and turn on/off on a month to month basis rather than a contract plan) powered 2-3 devices with ease when we were on the road and visiting family over the holidays.  I honestly thought it was faster than our WiFi at times.

The charger cover doesn’t look
exactly like this Smurf door
but it comes close.

It’s funny because since I’ve had the opportunity to play with the Droid Incredible, the Droid X, the Galaxy Tab, and now the Fascinate, I’m beginning to notice small details that I normally wouldn’t have looked for in a mobile device.  For instance one of my very favorite features of the Fascinate was the teeeny tiny little door for the charger cord.  When it wasn’t being charged, I didn’t have to worry about dirt and grime getting inside the phone.  I like to think of it as a Smurf detail.  Why have phones not put a little door on the charger port before?  Seems like a pretty simply addition.  Yes, I probably have OCD tendencies.  But it’s odd because I’m a super messy.  I digress.

I honestly didn’t use the phone part of the phone very often.  I’m a typer, not a talker.  But it seemed a little less touchy than some of the other devices I’ve tried.  I didn’t accidentally hang up someone even once.

Perhaps the smallest drawback was that when I was trying to delete 6 or more e-mails from one of my three e-mail accounts (again I have a problem) that occasionally it slowed or even force quit.  But deleting 5 or fewer really didn’t cause any issues.  It would have also been nice if I could view all of my 7 screens in an overview a little more like the Incredible.  But seriously if swiping from screen to screen is my biggest issue, I don’t think I could complain.

There’s still not money in our budget for a smart phone for me yet.  We just can’t cut the data plan bill.  Maaaayyyybbbbeee someday.  However, the King of Free is due for a new phone (his work pays for his plan as a part of his job) and I think he’s heavily leaning toward the Fascinate after being a Blackberry user for quite some time.  He borrowed it more than once to follow his fantasy football team and I think he took a shine to it.  And it’s been my favorite Smartphone thus far.

So farewell little Fascinating friend.  It’s been a good time.  I’ll miss you.

In the next few days, I’ll be sharing links of some of my favorite bloggers who also had the chance to review Verizon phones, making their holidays bright (or #VZWhAPPy as we like to say on Twitter).  So if you’re in the market for a new phone, this is the week to read up.
