Remember back when I said I was running one more Refuel Runner Ambassador race? Then I told you I chose Race for Roofs? One of the main reasons why I chose it because it was in late March. I’m not a big fan of running outside in cold weather. Honestly, I’d rather watch Netflix and run on the treadmill (have you seen Bomb Girls? It’s pretty fascinating.) than slip on ice or soaked by snow. The mere mention of the words Polar Vortex kept me inside in my cheery little orange room where the treadmill was for MONTHS. But a week or two ago, I began running outside again which was awesome. I remembered how much I liked my running route. I improved and evened out my pace (running on the treadmill throws me off). I love my Cardio Trainer app for tracking speed and mileage while rocking it out to my favorite songs. All was happy and good. A 5K on March 29th was perfect. Surely the sun would be shining, the birds singing, and the temperature above 40 degrees.
Y’all? It’s supposed to SNOW in the morning. I seriously don’t even want to contemplate the idea but I have already set out my warmest running gear and I plan on sprinting the entire thing. If I’m honest, I don’t want to get out of bed in the morning let alone run a 5K. But life is made up of moments where when we do what we don’t want to do, we’re rewarded with more than we expect. If we never take a single step, we never achieve anything.
Segueing back from my inspirational chatter to my whiney self. It has been an UGLY week around here. We had the stomach flu and it was end times awful, friends. People laying on the floor moaning. Children with headphones cranked to full volume so they wouldn’t have a sympathy episode. Bleach and laundry and sleeping on the couch for two nights. Plus, life goes on and there’s work to be done and children to shuffle to school. And that whole I’m in the editing process for the book and up to my ears in redlines, clarifications, corrections, discussion questions, and being sick of reading my own words. I might be tempting the insanity that is my life but I suppose tomorrow can’t get any uglier than this week, right?
When life gets ugly though, it’s good to have friends to carry you along. My fellow Refuel Ambassador, Katie is going to run with me in the morning. Back in November, we ran the Ugly Sweater Run together in ridiculously cold temperatures (although the sun was shining). There’s something to the solidarity of having someone else along for the journey. Knowing that she’ll be there waiting for me will encourage me to take that first step out of bed. The promise of drinking chocolate milk after we cross the finish line warms my heart even if my body is cold (we’re debating on heating it up though. #winnersdrinkhotchocolate?).
Also, we’re going to wear our ugly hats with pride (and to keep our ears warm).
You’re never a loser when you make a wise choice for your health or finances, even when it’s ugly or makes you uncomfortable. Be a winner. Winners Drink Milk.
