“Every child needs a hero, but abused children need Super Heroes.”
This is the mantra of the CASA SuperHeroRun. It was a beautiful morning to get out and about in downtown Indianapolis {I always LOVE a good 5K on the White River State Park Canal} last Saturday. I was blessed to have my college roommate along with me.
Sidebar: My roommate is the small woman with the blue t-shirt, not the 8 ft. Super Why character.
Additional Sidebar: If you ask the Radio Now guy to take your picture, he will prominently feature the Radio Now Tent instead of you. Little did he know I had the super hero power of covering up his logo! *KAPOW!*
We had an awesome time people watching before the race began. From a Wonder Woman we weren’t 100% sure was a Woman {I personally was glad that the boots came off before the run either way because that would have been ugly} to the cutest kids ever, there were plenty of great costumes. Chemistry Man was the best!
I *tried* to come up with a costume of my own but really struck out. I think because I was wearing my cute cow t-shirt that it would have been good to be “Cow Girl” and rocked some horns and a pink cow girl hat, complete with chocolate milk blasters on my arms. However, I really did want to run so I wasn’t sure I could master all of that gear with out falling on my face and/or yanking on something the entire 3.1 miles.
Right before we began, I realized my iPod Shuffle was dead {cue: sad trombone}. And I really don’t enjoy running without it – something about being able to hear myself breathe heavy creeps me out. But we powered through it. The route was peppered with CASA volunteers holding signs that said “Shazaam!” “Cowabunga” and “Fly Superhero, Fly!” Upon seeing this specific sign, I immediately made my friend put her wings out with me and we soared like eagles {or women in their mid 30s who looked like they had lost their ever loving minds, but whatevs we had fun}.
It turned out to be a great race. I finished with a time of 30:46.9 in 54th place over all {you can check my results here} and I realized today that I placed 3rd in my gender/age division. I was reminded that I really enjoy running with a friend. It pushes me to run faster and I enjoy the encouragement that having a pal by my side provides. Plus the pre and post race was filled with hilarious and serious conversations and of course shared people watching {with quips of “No one really needs a Captain America shield right there on their shorts, dude” mixed in too}.
I’m continuing to train this week {4 miles on the docket tomorrow AM!} so that I can continue to get in shape for the Indianapolis Women’s Half Marathon {don’t forget the code PRODUCEMOM if you’re signing up to run it with me and want to save $5}. Signing up for an event keeps me motivated. Running with a friend keeps me encouraged.
And of course Chocolate Milk keeps me refueled after a run!
