Freedom Friday: Happy Debteryversary!

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

April 2, 2010 By Cherie Lowe

Greetings Lords and Ladies.  I’m checking in again with where we’re at in our story today on Freedom Friday.  Find yourself a nice beverage and read along with where the Royal Family is in their Debt Slaying Journey to become COMPLETELY Debt Free.

Hey everybody. So glad you stopped by today. Freedom Friday is when I bi-weekly let you in on how we’re doing with our pursuit of paying off debt. It’s also when many of you have e-mailed me with your story (with either “Freedom in Progress” or “Freedom Achieved” in the subject line) so I can share your story to encourage others, too.

It’s hard to believe it’s been two years.  Two years ago TODAY (how perfect that it fell on a Freedom Friday?), our family decided to start paying off as much debt as we could as quickly as we could.  The Youngest Princess was less than a month old (she’s now two!).  The Eldest Princess was in Kindergarten (she’s finishing up 2nd grade now).  And we were in a HEAP of debt.  So what have we paid off in the past two years, you may ask?

  • My Student Loan
  • Furniture that we unwisely bought on a Payment Plan
  • A Kohls Card
  • Our Car
  • Our Target Visa Card
  • A C-Section Delivery and Medical Debt for the Youngest Princess
  • Ear Tube Surgery and a 150 Dr. Visits for the Youngest Princess
  • A New Water Heater bought with our emergency fund
  • A Root Canal and LOTS of Dental Work for me
  • And a ton toward the balance of the King’s Student Loan (our last debt!).
All to the tune of over $53K (I need to add this month’s total debt repayment in still so I think it might actually be more than that).  And we are now zipping right along on Sallie Mae.  Like I’ve said before she’s a rather LARGE and stately gal who will take more than a couple of years to knock out.  But I’m really excited to say that we ran into a bit of extra money this month and were about to put $2700+ toward paying it down this month.  HOLLA.
Paid off debts with their final notices are pinned to our refrigerator, each one a badge of bravery and a sign of a victory in a long battle.  And while 2 years might seem like a long time, it hasn’t felt like that long at all.  Talk to me in another 2 years and I might feel differently but I have a sneaking suspicion that it won’t.  The closer we come to become debt free, the more truly free I feel.  And that Lords and Ladies is a feeling you simply can’t buy.
Have a great Easter Weekend!
