Waaaay back at the beginning of the summer, I was blessed with the opportunity of attending a special dinner at Firehouse Subs on the northside of Indy (thanks for the invite Lady Ann-Marie!). None other than Firehouse Co-Founder Robin Sorensen took us through the entire Firehouse Menu and poked me so full of subs that by the end of things I was merely eating the insides and tossing aside the ah-mazing bread (which honestly might be a crime to toss aside but my stomach had no more room left).
Even better than the food was the storytelling that Robin wove throughout the sampling session. We learned how he and his brother began the business. They were firefighters with an amazing dream. We learned how the new Coke Freestyle machines were designed and implemented in all Firehouse franchises – simply amazing machines they are! From the wide array of hot sauces on the counter to the cheery greeting when you enter the door, nothing is an accident in the Firehouse Subs Restaurant you visit. We also learned about the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation that provides much needed funding and equipment for Emergency Services in the communities where Firehouse Subs restaurants are located. I was also thrilled to find out that the Sorenson family run a debt free corporation. WOOHOO! It is possible even for businesses. Robin was incredibly personable and I was overwhelmed with his extreme generosity. He shared that the primary reason he keeps working is to be as generous as he can when tragedy strikes. From the earthquakes in Haiti to tornadoes in Oklahoma, the Sorenson family personally attends to emergency relief personnel when they are stretched to their limits caring for the downtrodden, orphaned, and abandoned. To top things off, he spoke with extreme respect for Chick-fil-A and the Cathy family which I thought spoke volumes of his character.
Yep, these are the kinds of folks that shows like Undercover Boss were meant for. They actually were approached by the show but because the Sorenson brothers are so well known by their employees due to their constant contact, they didn’t think they’d be able to pull off a disguise that would fool any of them. I LOVE eating at restaurants where I know the good food is backed by great management and wise stewardship.
