Ahhh, it’s three things Thursday. Time for you to share three things you do, too. Today’s topic:
Three Things You Do to Save Money When Going Out to Eat:
1) We don’t actually eat out very often at all. But when we do, it’s not usually a spur of the moment decision. Instead, it’s a part of our meal plan. We know we’re going out, we look forward to it and we plan for it. In planning, we choose a restaurant based on the best coupons that we have. If you’re looking for a particular restaurant’s deals, it never hurts to Google the restaurant name and coupon to see if anything turns up.
2) Go for lunch. You can save major dough by going out for lunch instead of dinner. You end up saving money and eating less usually. A lot of places are running great deals on lunch right now because of the economic crunch. Take advantage of it! Many restaurants also offer lunch portions/prices during dinner hours. It never hurts to ask.
3) Order water to drink. Ok so this one is a biggie for me because I LOVE unsweetened tea. But if the drink is not included with the meal, do not order one. Drink prices continue to creep up (as much as $2 most places) and it’s basically like you’re sucking extra pennies down your throat. If you like wine with your meal, a growing trend is actually bringing your own bottle to dinner. Call ahead and clear it but many places allow you to do so.
Of course in all things, moderation is a good principle. There is a time for everything, no? And occasionally it’s ok to go out and go big. If you’re celebrating a milestone or someone special in your life, it’s fine to splurge. But plan for it and don’t be caught by surprise by a big bill.
Now it’s your turn! Share three things (or more or less) that you do to save cash when dining out.

1. Support some local organization and buy their discount card. For years we had a fast pitch softball team that would sell discount cards good for use at local restaurants and businesses. This card cost of all of 10$ each year, and we would make that money back in the first couple purchases we would make with it. It had a BOGO for any 6” sub at Subway! That was a steal! We enjoyed all of the discounts it provided us. Sadly, they don’t sell them anymore, so we’re on the prowl for another organization selling something similar.
2. We’re also an all water family when we eat out. As you said, it’s just such a waste otherwise.
3. We often split meals between our kids and then add to their half of a meal with food from our own order. We also try to explain to the kids that we won’t get the “kids’ meal” every time we go to a fast food place, because sometimes with coupons or with the “value menu” we can eat more cheaply.

1. My hubby and I split meals if it makes sense. For example, we love Chipotle, but a burrito is too much for the two of us. We split it, supplement with some chips and salsa, and voila, lunch for 2 for less than $10. Plus, it keeps us from being miserable for the rest of the day!
2. Drink water – enough said I hate to pay $2.50 for a soda!
3. Sign up for your favorite restaurants e-mail newsletter. One of our local faves offered a BOGO dinner evening (appetizers, entrees, and desserts), and we took advantage with some friends. The bill was equal to a night out for two!
