Royal Review and Giveaway: Tupperware Modular Mates

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

January 15, 2010 By Cherie Lowe

COMMENTS HAVE OFFICIALLY CLOSED!  THANKS TO ALL WHO ENTERED AND CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR WINNER.  Greetings Lords and Ladies!  I know several of you have been waiting for this post for quite some time so I’ll get right down to business.  When Lady Tammy of Tupperware contacted me to do a complete overhaul of my pantry, I was overjoyed.  It’s not just because I tend to be a messy person (which I am and have no problems admitting it in public).  It wasn’t just because I know that Tupperware makes solid, quality products.  (My mom still has several pieces bought decades ago that are in great shape!)  It was mainly because I knew having a better organized pantry would result in a better bottom line.  Being able to see exactly what I had in my cabinet would help me shop more effectively and avoid buying products I already had.  Having products stored properly would make them last longer and avoid throwing food (and the money spent on it) in the trash.

So on Wednesday, Lady Tammy came over and opened my pantry doors to this:

And what you can’t see was even worse.  You know, the stuff in the back . . . like an opened package of rice cakes (I have no idea when I last bought those), an open package of HALLOWEEN Peeps, and Valentine’s Day Candy from LAST YEAR.  Eww.

But when she left, it looked like this:

Amazing right?  I learned all sorts of amazing things about Tupperware Modular Mates (Did you know they’re the only kitchen containers that the military will move?  They keep tortillas fresh for well over 6 months?!?  Brown sugar can be kept soft in them for over 11 (ELEVEN) years?!?!?!).  But what I think I loved the best of all is how perfectly the containers stack and fit together so that your space is maximized.  Nothing is wasted.  I’m a big fan of not wasting – space, time, resources, money, you get the picture.  By the way, I didn’t catch the top shelf in the picture on the left but it’s pretty much empty.  I have a whole extra shelf now!

I have to be honest and say that I have spent some time simply staring into my cabinets over the last couple of days and my stress has been minimized by not having yet another messy corner of my world.  And I love being able to see exactly how much pasta, rice, quinoa, black beans, flax seed, etc. that we have so I can menu plan efficiently.  I know I’ll know exactly when I need to buy whole wheat flour or oatmeal again.  And I don’t have to deal with bulky boxes in the cabinets that only have crumbs left inside of them when I’m reaching for a snack.

Now’s the part where everyone breathes a collective sigh of relief with me . . .  ahhhhh!

And here’s the part where I share with you the SIX ways you can enter to win a deep sigh of relief in your pantry, too.  Up for grabs is 5 Piece Rectangular Modular Mate Set AND a 5 Piece Super Oval Modular Mate Set (pictured above) with your choice of either red or blue seals.  $135 worth of Tupperware for free!  Here’s how to enter:

2) Subscribe to the Queen of Free’s RSS Feed or e-mail subscription. Leave a SEPARATE comment here if you did (or already do).

3) Become a Friend of the Queen of Tupperware, Tammy Hornek on Facebook.  Leave a SEPARATE comment here if you did (or if you are already her friend).

A few closing notes: Modular Mates are on sale now through February 12th for 40% off!  So even if you don’t win you might want to think about investing in a system to save you money in the long run.  If you do decide to order anything, I’m hosting an online “party,” too.  AND Tammy Hornek is hosting a Pantry Organization Class on January 26th 6 PM at Faith Church (Southside of Indy).  Details are here.  She’s definitely a Pantry Wiz people!

REMEMBER, leave SEPARATE comments for multiple entries (I can’t count ’em otherwise).  Comments will close on Friday, January 22nd at midnight.  Our winner will be announced on Saturday morning, bright and early at 8 AM.  Good luck and get to commenting.  I’m going back to stare at my clean cabinets.

Tammy Hornek Tupperware provided me with a personal pantry re-organization, including  the necessary Tupperware to complete it.  No monies were received for this review nor was it edited by Tammy Hornek, Tupperware, or a PR company. I always give you my honest opinion regarding products so you can make an informed purchase decision.

My best pantry-organizational tip has been to keep the “from scratch” ingredients in easy reach, and make the convenience foods a little harder to get to. When I’m inspired to cook, I can reach for the pasta and spices rather than the Hamburger Helper! (Disclosure: there’s not actually any Hamburger Helper in my pantry, but you know what I mean)

favorite panty tip is probably old news — separation of likes. Fruit one shelf, veggies on another, pasta together, etc. Grouping likes and types allow for quick review of what you need prior to shopping.

man, I’m not sure I have a pantry organization tip! can’t let that dissuade me from entering though. 🙂 is it a tip to say that i keep the random “hardly ever use, but still do very occasionally so I don’t want to throw them away” stuff on the top shelf that I need a step ladder to reach? they’re still there and I can see them so I don’t forget where I stashed them. but dang, it’s not easy to reach that top shelf. 🙂

I just became Tammy Hornek Tupperware’s friend on Facebook.
Great organizational idea: rather than making several trips up and downstairs put a basket or bag near the bottom or top of the stairs. When you find a misplaced item that belongs on another level put it in the bag/basket and then once a day redistribute the items to their proper place.
    Ooops mine wasn’t pantry related.

My best pantry organizational tip is for spices. I use stair step organizers to house my spices tallest in the back, shortest up front. This is the one and only cabinet I open and feel stress free because everything is easy to find and neatly organized.

my best organizing tip is have tupperware for everything that is open 🙂 I LOVE Tupperware and you can actually either label the containers with their labels or write in sharpie what is inside and they will keep oreos fresh for MONTHS after opening(bonus too is if you don’t label the cookies, spouse and kids are less likely to peek inside leaving more for you:P )

I need some help with my cabinets too. I only have two tips: 1) I adjusted my shelves so that I have one “short” shelf for all short spice jars & baking supplies such as the little cans of sweetened condensed milk. That helped me use the cabinet space more efficiently & 2) I have a (plastic) gallon jar that I tuck all my opened bags of stuff like powdered or brown sugar, popcorn, Splenda, etc. so they aren’t sliding all over the place and taking up space I desperately need. The Tupperware set would be better still though.

This tip is both organizational AND economical…I buy the Malt-O-Meal cereal in bags (much less expensive than the TINY boxes of brand name cereal…As soon as I bring them home, I empty them into tupperware bins. They store neatly in my pantry and my children are none the wiser. I save big $ and don’t have to hassle with different size boxes with unsealed baggies holding 1/2 bowl of stale cereal!

I love lazy susan thingies for my pantry and I have the wonderful little stair steps for my spices that I enjoy using, too. My mom sometimes inventories her pantry and writes a little list and sticks it to the inside of the cabinet for a while to help her to remember to use things she might otherwise forget is in there.

    Hello!

My pantry is a large cabinet with about deep shelves. My best organizational tip is that I put all of the items that are needed for recipes on the same shelf and my Husband knows that this shelf is ‘off limits.’ Every other item in the pantry is available for him to snack on or throw together for a small meal. When I am making dinner and need ingredients from the pantry, I know exactly what shelf the items are on. It makes it just a little easier for me.

My newest pantry organization came out of necessity of having a toddler who likes to get into everything. He loves to empty the lower kitchen cabinet drawers. When he got to the drawer with the storage bags, he would empty out the boxes one by one. So now I store all of the bags in a gallon size storage bag, and write the size on the outside. He’ll still empty the drawer, but now he just pulls the entire bag out at once. Without the different sizes boxes that I had to fit into the drawer like a jigsaw puzzel, I actually have more room that drawer now too.

My newest pantry organzation came out of having a toddler who likes to empty kitchen cabinet drawers. I store all of my storage bags in a one gallon storage bag and write the size on the outside. This way when my little one emptys the drawer, he’s not pulling out the bags from their boxes since he can’t open the bags. Plus I’ve found I can get more in that drawer if the bags are not in rigid boxes.

I round up my daughters snacks that end up floating lose around the cupboard, and put them in a ziplock bag for easy access, that way I can stash them on any shelf with some space, and still easily see them to grab them in a hurry. I would love to use new tupperware for that purpose instead of a ziplock bag though! Thanks Queen of Free!

My tip is that I purchase things in bulk at sams club like flour just because it ticks me off when I’m about to bake and am out, and I seperate it into large tupperware containers and put it in the freezer until I need it. It keeps things like flour and rice fresh and out of the way in the pantry and our chest freezer needs to be at least 2/3 full to run efficiently so it works out.

My organization tip is to make sure that everyone else in the family knows the organization method you are using. If you keep the snacks on the 2nd shelf, everyone needs to know to put them back on the same shelf. If you do not share the information, only 1 person in your family is likely to put the food back where they found it.

My favorite pantry organizing tip is the over the door hanger shelf thingy (no clue what the technical name is). Best $17 I’ve spent in a LONG time. The shelves are adjustable for different heights, and I love it love it love it. One tip though…do not put a half-used box of acini de pepe on the bottom shelf (even if the box is closed)…children trying to shut the pantry door a little too hard can, um, cause said box of acini de pepe to fall off and go ALL.OVER.THE.FLOOR. *Ahem* Just sayin.

I drink A LOT of tea and like a lot of flavors. Instead of having all of those boxes taking up room on my shelves, I use 2 long, narrow drawer organizers and line up all of my packets in those. I always know what I am low on with just a glance.

I make meals and freeze them for my elderly father who lives several hours away. I like to make the meals whenever I have the time. So to stay organized, I often buy the dry goods ingredients in advance when they are on sale, and keep them in a special area of my pantry so I can find them easily. This could be done for any special purpose of course, such as a school bake sale, or holiday party. I group together as many ingredients as possible for the occasion in a container and then use a color coded marker on a label to separate the products from the rest of my pantry (e.g., blue for my dad, red for July 4th barbecue, etc.) Really saves time searching for the products I need when I am ready to cook or bake for the specific event!
