Welcome Weekend Sunrise Viewers: Make Your Mixes!

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

April 6, 2013 By Cherie Lowe

Catch me tomorrow morning on WTHR Weekend Sunrise at 7:45 AM!  Here’s a sneak peek of some of the money saving tips I’ll share.

Convenience foods are oh-so-easy when you need a snack or meal quick and ready. But making your own is not only healthier {what ARE some of those ingredients on the back of the box?!} and more cost effective. Recipes about for making everything from your own brownie mix to your own Hamburger Helper to your own taco seasoning. Here are a few tips for getting your mix on with out getting mixed up.

Invest in some airtight containers. Whether it’s a resealable container or Ziploc baggies, you want to be sure you get a tight seal on your mixes. So it might be time invest in some containers that are devoted solely to your mix. You can even freeze many of the dry mixes if you’re not planning to use them right away.

Label Items Well with Instructions. Once of the conveniences of the box mixes is that the directions are printed right there on the package. So if you’re making your own, don’t forget to include clear instructions including what items still need to be added, times and temperatures for coking, and accurate measurements. Either use a sharpie, print out directions, or keep your own recipe book.

Use the Internet: For a couple of weeks, I’ve been creating the Pinterest Board: Mix it Up and you’ll find several different ideas and free printables there. You may or may not need to scale your personal mix down {get those math skills all ready!}. Some of my favorites include and Redfly Creations’ Tortilla Mix, All Purpose Mix, Brownie Mix, Corn Bread Mix, & Muffin Mix. I also love Just a Pinch’s Skillet Meal which is super easy and has way less ingredients than the pre-boxed variety.

Look for Multi-purpose Mixes. Rather than making 150 different mixes and cluttering your cabinets with every variety, look for a basic mix that can be used for a number of items.

Here’s a very basic whole wheat pancake/waffle mix that can be easily modified by added your favorite fruits, chocolate, nuts, or even granola:

Do you make any of your own mixes?
