What Do You Do Wednesday? Calling Frugal Fashionistas!

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

February 10, 2010 By Cherie Lowe

Ok, so you’ve decided to pay off debt.  And that means you’re leaving out all of the extras – trips to get your nails done, eating out, knick knacks and hobbies – all of it’s hit the trail as you pinch your pennies and pay off that debt.  Where does that leave your wardrobe?  What can you to do to save cash and still look smashing?

I did a short survey on the Queen of Free Facebook Fan Page (Seriously, why are you not a fan yet?  I chitter chatter on there all the day long and fellow Lords and Ladies in the Court of the Queen of Free lend their best frugal advice which is often much better than my own!) to find out what you do to save big on clothes.  Many of you suggested thrift stores, consignment shops, clearance sales (the really good stuff, not 10% off), end of season shopping, yard sales, and more.  I LOVE the idea of borrowing or hosting a swap with friends.  Holla Lady Kim with your library analogy!
Keep in mind that it’s O.K. to budget for clothes.  Just be realistic.  Keep in mind the difference between a want and a need.  Set a limit and keep within it.  Pay cash.  Make sure you LOVE it.  Return it if you have buyer’s remorse (don’t wear and return though, that’s just wrong).  Ask a frugal buddy to go with you.  Take 24 hours before purchasing something that’s not an immediate need.
Cherie in Lands' End, day 1So that’s my two cents!  I did my best to follow my own advice a couple of weeks ago as the fabulous Lady Jenny of Mommin’ It Up teamed with with the ever wonderful Ladies Donita and Michele from Lands’ End to provide me with a wardrobe for Blissdom.  I shared with Lady Jenny that comfort was a premium for me but I still wanted to venture beyond my hoodies, jeans, and tennis shoes for this event.  Here’s what together, they came up for me:

Day 1: I wore these UNBELIEVABLY comfy Everyday Chinos ($14.99!) in Sadle with layered White Tank and Deep Sapphire (Colts Blue as I like to call it!) Scoop Neck T.  And I *heart* the adorable little Lands’ End shoes that were only $11.99 but are now sold out!  I paired it with a necklace I already had, a blazer that I already had and of course my crown.  If you need a pair of pants, I HIGHLY recommend those!  They were super comfy (like pajama pants, seriously!) and still made me look like a big girl.  😉

royal RAWR! Cherie's Lands' End Wrap DressFor the Harry Connick, Jr. Concert that night, I wanted to dress up a little bit more than I usually do and Jenny found this awesome dress for me to wear.  It was so comfortable, fit my kind of odd body shape perfect, and was easy to pack/unpack.  I paired it with jewelry borrowed from Lady Holly, my crown, a cami I already had, and my absolute favorite pair of shoes.  Now, let the record show that I did pick out a dress on clearance but it was out of stock.  So I went with what they sent to me.  And I love it because it won’t ever go out of style.  Classic pieces in solid colors (especially black) will go the distance so you don’t have to buy something new next season!  They’re worth the extra few budgeted bucks.

Cherie, Queen of Free in her Lands' EndWe wrapped the weekend in this uber comfy ensemble:  These are the softest, most well fitting jeans I have ever worn.  I love the way they fit!  Jenny chose this tank in Fern Green and a supa cozy brown sweater.  She accessorized it with a cute scarf (which must also have been snapped up by post season clearance shoppers just like you!).  I rocked the crown and wore the same cutie patootie shoes.  Two side notes about this picture: 1) I was starting to get my cold at this point and I struggled to keep my nose from looking like Rudolph’s.  2) The jeans while the newest favorite piece of my wardrobe dyed my legs and hands blue, causing me to look like Smurfette before the end of the evening.  Other Lands’ End lovers mentioned they had the same problem the first few times they wore them.  It was worth the extra soap in the shower though.  I *heart* those jeans!

So what about you?  What do you do to save big when it comes to clothes?  Share your best Frugalista Fashionista tips here.

As stated above, Lands’ End provided me with a Blissdom Fashion Makeover, complete with wardrobe chosen by Jenny Rapson of Momminitup. No monies were received for this review nor was it edited by Lands’ End, Jenny Rapson, or a PR company. I always give you my honest opinion regarding products so you can make an informed purchase decision.  Thanks to Lady Jenny and her Flickr Photostream of fun for all of the fun pictures.
