What Do You Do Wednesday, Healthy and Inexpensive Snacks . . .

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

So keeping in the spirit of getting “Buff on a Budget,” I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite snacks that don’t bust your budget or a your gut (that was bad, even for me).  It seems like most inexpensive or convenient foods aren’t the best bet for your body when it comes to snacking.  Pre-packaged chips, cereal bars, granola bars, some meal replacement bars, and 100 calorie packs all are usually high in carbs, low in fiber and protein, and chocked full of high fructose corn syrup, sugar, and empty calories.  A good snack needs to be a mix of carbs and protein with plenty of fiber.  Fiber is the fill you up trick to keep you from scarfing down 3 100-calorie packs.  Here are some of my favorite inexpensive, filling, and tasty snacks to nosh on when I’m hungry.

1) Fresh fruits and vegetables.  Nature’s snacks are always the best.  To get the best deals on fruit,  you have to shop the ads to see what’s in season and on sale.  I love Aldi because their fruit and veggie prices are ridiculously lower than the big box stores.  Keep your sanity and satisfy the munchies quickly by chopping all of your veggies as soon as you bring them home from the store.  You’ll have an insta-salad bar in your crisper, quick snacks, and even pizza toppings ready to roll just when you need them.

2) Homemade Granola, Almonds, and Dark Chocolate.  If a case of the sweets hit you, this is a great alternative to a candy bar or indulgent dessert.  Keep your portions in check – only 1/4 c of granola, a handful of whole raw almonds, and a small piece or two of dark chocolate (at least 60% cacao).  Pre-mix it and place it in your favorite re-sealable container to have it on hand when you’re out and about.

3) Toast and Olive Oil.  I absolutely love dipping bread in olive oil.  It can be a great filling snack.  Olive oil has great nutritional benefits and when you’re pairing it with 100% Whole Wheat bread, you get the fiber that keeps you full.  I will often buy bread with extra fiber.  Just remember to keep it to one or two pieces (depending on the size of the slice) and not eat the whole loaf.

What about you?  What are some of your favorite healthy and inexpensive snacks?  Share them with us all!
