Save Money & Slay Debt

Change the World with Change

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

May 15, 2010 By Cherie Lowe

I think one of the hardest thing about being in debt is not being free to give whenever I see a need.  One of our goals in paying off all of our debt is to be able to “Live like no one else so someday we can give like no one else.”  (Probably my favorite Dave Ramsey-ism).  Being saddled with debt makes it very difficult to give to causes that I love, people who have great needs, or places that need restoration.

However, since April 2008 when we began our journey of paying off debt, I’ve also found that there are creative ways to support others, encourage change, and be generous with what we’ve got – even if it’s only spare change.  Here are just a couple of examples of ways for you to be generous that have come across my path this week.

  • Lady Chels from The Fantastic Find notes that you can pick up a special 5 EP Album Download of Jars of Clay’s “Flood” for only $1 right here (takes me right back to my freshman year at college).  It’s a great deal but the even better deal is 100% of the profits will be donated to charities to support relief efforts in Nashville, TN where floods have destroyed many homes and businesses.  You get to be generous and even get something in return.
  • Lady Kellea e-mailed with information about the 2010 Arthritis Walk in Indianapolis on Saturday June 5th at 7 PM (evening hours are best for people struggling with arthritis).  Lady Kellea’s 5 year old daughter Kolyn has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (and is cute as a button).  The event is FREE and you can walk either 1 or 3 miles in honor of someone you know who faces the challenges of arthritis.  There are free activities for kids who have pre-registered, too.
Do you have a good example of a way to be generous without spending lots of cash?  There are plenty you just have to be a little creative.  E-mail me at thequeenoffree@gmail.com and I’d be glad to share it with everyone else (and give you credit).
