What Do You Do Wednesday: Saving on Baby Food

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

July 7, 2010 By Cherie Lowe

Since I’ve had two separate unrelated people ask me about saving money on baby food this week, I thought I’d share some of my thoughts with you all.

  • Obviously if you’re going to buy it in the store, use as many coupons as you can.  Sign up with Earth’s Best, Gerber, Beechnut, Happy Baby or your favorite brand so you can access them online and via mail.  When available, stack coupons at places like Meijer, Target, and Walgreens
  • Apple Sauce doesn’t have to be baby brand.  I remember this rocking my world the first time someone told me.  I’m not as bright as the other Queens.  Yes “adult” applesauce isn’t quite as fine in texture, but it has the same ingredients (buy unsweetened/no sugar added because that’s what you should be eating anyway).  If you think it’s too thick, water it down or blend it further.
  • Make your own!  It’s very easy to do and it’s how we kept the Youngest Princess alive (she’s 2.5 now so I think we did ok).  I used Crockpot 365 and Wholesome Babyfood as my guide.
  • Money Saving Tips and Ideas on Making Your Own Baby Food:
    • Don’t buy a fancy food processor just for baby food.  I found my $4 Walmart (Black Friday steal a few years back) to be the best!
    • Make your food in mass and freeze it.  I found it easier to make a large batch and freeze the majority of it.
    • Don’t buy fancy trays.  You can just as easily use ice cube trays with either aluminum foil or in a gallon Ziploc bag.
    • Don’t be afraid to try some of it yourself.  My Honey Pear Cinnamon Sauce was birthed from fixing plain pears (never give a child under the age of 1 honey) for the Youngest Princess.
We still used purchased food upon occasion but for the most part, I loved knowing exactly what was going into my little one’s mouth.  Fewer hands had touched it and it costed me considerably less.  Double bonus.
What about you?  What have you done or what are you doing to save money on baby food?
