Saving Money Easter 2021

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

March 27, 2021 By Cherie Lowe

Celebrate this year without overspending. Easter 2021 will be unique. What you need to know now to keep money in your wallet this year.

The days of spring are officially in full swing. And in a matter of a weeks, Easter 2021 will be here. It’s yet another holiday during a pandemic. The state of the world doesn’t change this holiday we celebrate or its meaning. However, traditional methods of celebrations may be slightly altered for some of us. We need to think ahead so we both have what we need and so we avoid overspending. Create a memorable Easter on a budget this year.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

Last minute shopping usually leads to overspending for most of us. We hit the aisles in a fury and end up picking up more than we can need or use. But this year, last minute shopping might also lead to shortages on the items you typically purchase for Easter celebrations. Whether you’re doing a curbside pick up or shopping in person, you’ll want to begin well in advance.

Think Long Term When It Comes to Easter Baskets

Oh how I love seasonal aisle shopping. But here’s the stark truth for those of us who adore everything bunny or egg shaped this time of the year, Easter baskets only last for a day. And after we’ve emptied them, few of us think about those speciality items again for another year. Rather than purchasing knick knacks enjoyed for a day or two, think about buying gifts designed to enjoy into the spring and summer months. For the basket itself, consider buying one you use every year rather than collecting several and having to either store it or throw it away. Avoid fillers like Easter grass that make a mess and typically get tossed immediately.

Keep Your Meal Simple

Odds are good, you’ll again be celebrating with a smaller group of people this year. So rather than planning a feast fit for 50, keep your menu simple. Try to prepare a main dish, a maximum of three side dishes, and bread. You’ll likely have more than you need and be able to feast on leftovers for a day or two.

Check Restaurant Carryout Options

Don’t feel like cooking? Many restaurants are once again offering bundled family meals to help keep things a bit simpler. Bob Evans has options for individual platters, brunch, and family meals. Cracker Barrel has heat and serve meal options for 4-6 or 8-10, depending on the size of your family. Metro Diner Diner has heat and serve offerings for 1, 4, 8. With all of these options, keep in mind you’re likely to still have to warm items up at home. And you’ll want to order in advance. See above note about not waiting until the last minute. Don’t forget to check with local restaurants, too. Smokehouse Catering on the south side has fabulous holiday offerings again this year.

Dig Up Last Year’s Decor & Plastic Eggs

Last but certainly not least, odds are good you may have some decor and eggs from years past hiding in your closet. You may even have an Easter basket surprise or two hidden away. So before you go on a shopping spree, dig out those things you already have to decorate and keep things simple. If you’re like me, you may have a dye kit that you picked up clearance that’s waiting to be used. Again, if you’re planning in advance this year, you can save yourself a few bucks by knowing what you already have.

Our celebrations may still not be back to “normal” quite yet, but it doesn’t mean we can’t get dressed in our best, attend church or stream it online, and enjoy some candy, too. Just be sure to keep your spending in check at the same time.
