Super Savings for Big Game Snacks

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

Your Big Game Snacks don't have to cost a bundle! These simple and tasty ideas will keep everyone happy without breaking the bank.

It’s that time of the year for families to crowd around the TV for fun, football, and of course food! But, Super Bowl LV will be played during a pandemic. So while the game itself hasn’t changed, your approach to Big Game Snacks probably should this year. There’s plenty you can do, even at the last minute to prepare a delicious and simple feast without breaking the bank.

Skip Bulk Items

Most health experts agree it’s not wise to have a large group gathering this year. So that likely means you’ll be feeding fewer people. And so even though the deals might be great for a bulk supply, it’s still smarter to go small with your purchases. The only exception comes in the form of items that can be frozen and used for your next quick and easy meal.

Build a Bar

I’m not talking about constructing an actual piece of furniture, nor am I discussing adult beverages. Instead, I’m thinking about food. One easy way to make sure everyone can get the snacks they want customized to their taste without spending as much cash is by creating an opportunity for your family to add their own toppings to simple, basic snacks.

  • Nacho Bar: Chips, a protein or two (ground beef and chicken are easiest), cheese, veggies, and perhaps some sour cream and you have endless snack options all night long.
  • Grilled Cheese Bar: Make your own customized sandwich. Select 2-3 different types of cheese and breads. Add in protein. Deli meat is easy and works great. Some veggies and even fruit – apples are delicious – allow everyone to add their own favs without getting too pricey.
  • Make Your Own Pizza: Whip up some dough from scratch. Choose a basic sauce for everyone and then allow each person to add veggies, meats, and seasonings of their choosing.
  • Popcorn/Trail Mix Bar: Nuts, candy, and popcorn, oh my! The combinations are limitless as you load up your bowl. Obviously keep in mind any food allergies. If you’re looking for an even more affordable option, consider different popcorn seasonings. I’d highly recommend popping the corn on the stove, the old fashioned way.
  • Sundae Bar: Ice cream is never a bad idea. Pull out the chocolate chips, the sprinkles, the cookies, and syrup and you’ve got next level treats for days.

Take Advantage of Carry Out Specials

Restaurants have been hit hard this year. If you’ve got extra cash budgeted for dining out, now is a great time to place a carry out order and bring it home for the game. Especially if you can, support local restaurants. We’ll likely be taking advantage of the awesome offers at Smokehouse Catering. Many of the great family meal deals can help you feed your crew for less cash at chain restaurants today. If you do order, do it STAT. Especially if you’re planning on taking advantage of free delivery from places like McAlister’s or pizza specials, there’s likely to be a bit of a wait. And of course, always look for a coupon.

Don’t Forget Some Healthy Snacks

I know, I know, no one wants to hear this nonsense. But friends you’re not going to feel so great if you don’t eat at least a little something of nutritional value. But instead of a big pre-packaged veggie tray, focus on what you’ll really eat. I’m always a fan of carrots and apples. They’re easy to prepare and taste awesome with peanut butter or a little homemade ranch dip.

Crack Out the Crockpot

Football games aren’t short. Add in the pre-game and it makes for a long day of grazing. So you’re not constantly in the kitchen, it’s smart to put together some simple dishes in your slow cooker that can stay warm all evening long. I’m always heading over to my friends’ Mikey and Cris’ Recipes that Crock for fresh ideas. Here are a few of my picks for Super Sunday:

  • Low Carb Crock Pot Bacon Cheesy Chicken Dip
  • Crock Pot Sweet Spicy Bites
  • Sweet Tangy Meatballs
  • Crock Pot Ham and Swiss Sliders

This is the year to scale back the menu a little. Don’t forget to pack up those leftovers for lunch (and maybe dinner) the next day, too.
