End of the Summer Frugal Fun: Homemade Sprinklers

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

July 29, 2011 By Cherie Lowe

We used to have this cute little Elmo Sprinkler.  But then he really didn’t sprinkle anymore.  And so he got pitched in a purge this spring.  And since then, I’ve been debating buying a new sprinkler for the Princesses. We don’t have a baby pool.  Our yard is really big.  And it’s been really hot.

Buuuuutttt, you know me.

I don’t like to spend money.

Now that the summer is drawing to a close (but not getting any cooler), I’ve thought about hitting the clearance aisle to see what I can pick up.  But instead, I thought I’d hit the internetz and pick up everyone else’s creative ideas and maybe make a cooler one than even Elmo on the cheap.

Sir Brad of 4tunate has constructed a Man’s Man sprinkler for their cute little Quadruplet four-year-old boys.  Seriously, it’s more like a car wash (or maybe a tricycle wash) constructed of PVC pipe.  Here’s another PVC Sprinkler variation – less drive thru, more on the ground – from Lady Tammy of She Wears Flowers (the girl can rock the PVC cutter).

This pop bottle sprinkler is a bit more economical and equally as fun (and maybe a little more fitting for my skill level).  Lady Rebekah of Simply Rebekah even has the cutest tutorial video EVER.  I love how she plays in the sprinkler when she finishes it.  My kind of girl.  🙂  If you’re reading via RSS, click over to my site to check out Lady Rebekah’s video.

I also found three cool water sprayers from TLC family. that sound a bit more wild and your older Princesses and Princes will enjoy getting soaked.  I can hear the giggles already.  There are detailed instructions but no pictures but you can build either Water Whip, a Water Hand, or a Tin Can Shower with the directions here.

Got any other frugal fun sprinkler ideas for me?  It doesn’t look like it’s going to cool off anytime soon and we need some relief (plus our extra crunchy grass probably wouldn’t mind either).

[…] Make Your Own Sprinkler: There are a couple of ways to approach this one. Probably the easiest and most accessible way to make a homemade sprinkler is to take a 2 Liter Bottle once filled your favorite fizzy beverage and either drain it or drink it. After it’s empty and rinsed out, poke small holes into the bottle. The use duct tape to attach the bottle to your hose. Turn the pressure up to increase the height of the water flow. The King of Free also built an amazing sprinkler system a couple of years ago out of PVC pipe, too. You simple join together the pipe with joint & drill holes sporadically along the pipe. You will need a special head to attach it to a hose but you can find those in most home improvement stores. You’ll have a one of a kind water soaking experience that you can bring out every day of the summer for summers to come rather than a whole lot of cash out on one day at the pool or water park. For some of the posts that inspired our sprinkler, read this. […]
