How to Get Better Sleep Without a New Mattress

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

You don't need to buy a new mattress! Get better sleep tonight with these cheap and FREE ideas to give you a good night's rest.

A good night’s sleep – it’s the goal and aim of almost everyone. However, a third of the population doesn’t get the recommended seven hours they need each night. And it’s costing us. Better sleep is linked to healthier finances. Productivity increases. Stress decreases.

However, sleep aids and mattresses are big business. While most of us want a higher quantity and quality of sleep, we may not be able to afford those items promising just that. These simple, affordable ideas can help you rest better at night while also allowing you to rest easier about your finances too.

Flip Your Mattress

If it’s been awhile, you may want to consider flipping things around. Over time, your mattress adapts to your sleep positions. Doing a simple turn can both extend the life of your bed and allow you to catch a few more z’s at night.

Keep it Cool

Adjusting your thermostat can both save you money and help bring sweet dreams. Experts recommend dialing down the temperature in your home between 65 and 67 degrees allows for optimal sleep. During the fall, winter, and spring, this will likely save you money on your heating bill as well. Be sure to put back a few pennies for the summer if you want to keep it dialed that far down. Or opt to use a fan to cool things off.

Invest in New Pillows

Replacing your pillows can also be an affordable solution to getting better sleep. Personally, I’m a fan of purchasing pillows from warehouse stores like Costco or Sam’s Club. You can get a higher quality product at a much better price than a department store or even a big box retailer.

Switch Off the Overhead Lights

Signal to your body that sleep is on the way each evening. Turn off any bright overhead lights about an hour before bedtime. Opt for lamps and warm lighting in the space in between beginning to wind down and hitting the hay.

Power Down Electronics

I know this won’t be a popular strategy, but it’s one of the most effective. The blue light emitted by the television, laptops, and your phone makes getting to sleep difficult. When you switch off the lights, power down your devices, too.

Buy a Simple Alarm Clock

It’s also wise to charge your phone and other devices in a room that’s not your bedroom. If you need to, by a simple alarm clock to use in its place. Remove the potential middle of the night distraction or sleep disruption.

Clean Your Room

Mom knew it was helpful and she was right. Take some time to re-evaluate your bedroom. Clean up clutter and remove items that cause undue stress or worry (except keep your alarm clock). Create a space you love and one that helps you to feel at rest. Typically less is more when it comes to your bedroom and good sleep.

Routine Is Everything

Our bodies do best when we have a schedule and routine. This means that you need an alarm clock to tell you when to go to bed as much as you need one to wake you in the morning. Each evening, be intentional with your time so that you can foster healthier sleep patterns.

We all function better when well rested. And sleeping well doesn’t mean you have to spend tons of cash on supplements, special linens, or fancy bedding. Focus on making simple and free changes to bring more rest.
