I’d acquiesce to the statement that most items in my possession fall more into the “want” than the need category. The fun art that hangs on my wall. This lovely laptop under my fingertips, my cell phone, even the majority of items in my kitchen cabinet. The world wouldn’t fall part if suddenly I didn’t have all of the above. However, for me, sheets and towels are much more of a need than a want so finding sheets and towels on sale is a priority. Now, I’m not saying you need 16,000 count sheets but you probably do need something separating you from the mattress and it sure is nice to have a towel to dry off with after a shower (especially if it’s fresh from the dryer). But just because both are needs, it doesn’t mean you need to overpay for either. Rather, there is strategy at play for making the most of your purchase.
Time Your Purchases Well
There are times of the year when linens are more affordable. While most would identify January as the best time of the year to purchase sheets and towels, I’d tend to think this is more of a marketing strategy than a true savings strategy. Instead, I find that most of the best deals are actually found on Black Friday. A close second runner up is after the back to school/college items have been clearanced (you should be on the prowl at the time of the writing of this article). Just because something as advertised as a White Sale doesn’t mean you’ll get the best prices. You’d do much better with clearance than a sale any day.
Make the Most of Coupons
A $10/$10 Kohls or JC Penney coupon is a prized possession in our household. Rather than running for the fashion racks, consider using these valuable savings tools for the practical. Whether you’re purchasing a new pillow or a set of kitchen towels, you can make the most of one of these offers and might be able to buy something for only pennies over the coupon amount if you find the best offer. Even if you don’t have a high dollar coupon, you need to search for coupons before you leave the house. There’s rarely not a coupon for stores that carry linens.
Don’t Forget to Check Discounters
While sometimes out of the way and not always stocked full of the trendiest items, you don’t want to forget to check discount stores. In particular for sheets, I typically head to retailer Old Time Pottery before biting the bullet at a high end store. TJ Maxx’s HomeGoods is another great option. Even big box retailers can have high quality linens at a much lower price than a department store. Again, you’re wise to check coupon options like Meijer’s mPerks and Target’s Printable, Mobile, or Cartwheel coupons to maximize your deal.
Head to the Internet
This might not work for every shopper, but a number of deal sites like Groupon, Eversave, and Living Social routinely offer deals on linens. If you’d rather feel your goods before purchase this might not work for you (although many of the sites do have a decent return policy). Especially if you have referral dollars in your account, you might be able to score a fantastic deal by checking these websites on a regular basis.
