Great FREE Events for Families with Kids in Indy

Christmastime is one of the most difficult months for me to reign in spending on my kids. There are so many wonderful experiences and gifts that I long to give them. Plus, we’re so busy with programs, parties, and special events that it’s hard to keep our meal plan on track. While you certainly need to stay on budget when it comes to kids and Christmas, they area also many great FREE opportunities to spend time as a family, especially here in Indianapolis. Here are just a few of the events that you can enjoy.

  • 12 FREE Days of Indy Christmas: Beginning December 13th, all the way until Christmas Eve, destinations throughout Indianapolis will be offering FREE Admission. Destinations participating include the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library (Dec. 13). Bring your skates to skate for FREE  at the Pan Am Center (Dec. 14). Ride to the top of the Soldiers & Sailor’s Monument for FREE (Dec. 15). Enjoy Celebration Crossing at the Indiana State Museum (Dec. 16), Travel back in time at the James Whitcomb Riley Museum (Dec. 17). Experience an 1865 Christmas at the Morris-Butler House (Dec. 18). Check out the Winter Solstice Celebration at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (Dec. 19). Ladies & Gentlemen, start your engines at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame (Dec. 20). Spend the day at the Indiana History Center (Dec. 21). Make your Christmas Presidential at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site (Dec. 22). Sweat off some of those Christmas cookies at NIFS for FREE (Dec. 23). Be a kid, no matter your age at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (Dec. 24).
  • Winterfest at the Indiana History Center. Each Saturday in December & December 26-28th, the Indiana History Center will open its doors for families. Plus, there will be plenty of great activities, ranging from a screening of the holiday classic A Christmas Story to special craft sessions. For a line up of all of the activities, go here.
  • City Sidewalks on Georgia Streets. On December 13 & 14, head to an outdoor Christmas celebration. Special holiday performers, a live nativity, and visits with Santa are just a few of the highlights. Check out the schedule here.
  • Christmas on the Farm. Head down to the Trader’s Point Creamery on December 14 from 9 am to 2 pm. Live elk, sleigh hayrides, carolers, crafts, and jolly ‘ole St. Nick all feature on this special day.
  • Christmas at the Lily House. The Indianapolis Museum of Art’s Lily House is free now through January 5th. Explore this historic home’s holiday decor.
  • Rejoice! at Clowe’s Memorial Hall. Hear the best sounds of the season Dec. 13 & Dec. 14. Admission is FREE but a ticket is required. To reserve yours, go here.
  • FREE Christmas Light Displays. From neighborhoods to business displays, there are places all over the city to catch a dazzling glimpse of winter wonder. Find a listing of some of my favorite places to see Christmas lights in Indianapolis for FREE here.

What fun FREE event are you looking forward to this holiday season with your family?
