So I’m not big on New Year’s Resolutions. I think it stems from the fact that I used to not go to the gym at all in January because so many people would be taking all of the equipment that I didn’t see them using the month before (and because I knew they would be long gone come February). But even more than that, I feel like New Year’s Resolutions usually leave us disappointed and unfulfilled before the end of January. Resolutions also usually involve the words never, always, and everyday – three very dangerous words. Because if you fall off the wagon, lose track, or miss a day then you feel so. guilty. And guilt is not productive if you really want to achieve something.
I have no problems with goal setting, though. If you’re going to goal set, you can do it any day of the year! And in fact, you should resolve to set goals every month. It helps keep you focused on growing and succeeding. Goals should be attainable, specific, and realistic. We all know what’s within our power and what’s not. It doesn’t mean we don’t reach for the stars but it does mean that we at least have more than star gazing as a part of our action plan. Some of my goals for the new year are as follows.
1) Read one piece of non-fiction every month. I love to read and I strongly believe it adds to a person’s character and depth. We use the public library so we have plenty of books at our fingertips. I’ll share the title each month so that you can read along with me if you like. Beginning in January, I’m reading The Principle of the Path by Andy Stanley.
2) Be more intentional about working out on a regular basis. We’re going to have a moment next week where I come clean and delve into some more details here and give you the history. But bottom line, I am not pleased with my fitness level.
3) Learn more about composting. This one goes hand in hand with number four. This is mainly an initiative by the King of Free but will be a family effort. Resources, links, tips, ideas, and suggestions are welcomed! E-mail me or leave a comment.
4) Square Foot Garden. We are determined to grow more of our own food this year for many reasons – both economic and ecological. We’re starting small and our frame is already built. I’m thrilled and scared to death because of our record at keeping things alive.
5) Set more goals. Cheesy, I know but each month I hope to share a goal or two with you that I’m working on specifically that month (and keep you updated on each of the ones above).
What goals do you have for the new year? Make them concrete and attainable with a specific timetable to help you succeed! Happy New Year.
