This month there was a great article about how to “Save money all around the house” this summer on page 11. Here’s a sampling of some of the great tips:
In the kitchen:
- Cool it. Because your refrigerator has to work harder to cool down warm food – which wastes energy – let leftovers sit on the counter before putting them in the fridge. To avoid the growth of dangerous bacteria, set a timer for 30 to 45 minutes to tip you off when your food will be the right temperature. Don’t leave food out longer than two hours.
- Fill your freezer. A half-empty freezer expends extra energy to chill the unused space. Store bags of ice in any vacant spots.
- Rearrange the room. Don’t put anything that generates heat (such as lamps or televisions) near your thermostat. It will sense warmth from those items and prompt the AC to run longer than necessary.
- Cover the windows. Install white shades, drapes or blinds to reflect heat away from the house. Close window treatments during the day to keep rooms cool.
- Clean up the right way. Use a bucket of water – not a hose – to wash your car or bicycle. A hose can go through 6 gallons of water per minute if you leave it running, whereas a bucket and sponge require only a few gallons at a time.
- Take advantage of nature. Plant deciduous trees on the south and west sides of your home to block the sun.
