Summer Time Money Saving Tips from All You!

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

Everybody say it with me now, All You is the Queen’s FAVORITE magazine!  It’s filled with money saving tips, fashion and beauty ideas, recipes, health and fitness tips, and the coupons OOOOHHHH the coupons!  This month there are $112 worth of coupons in this little magazine.  You can buy it in store for around $2.50 at Walmart OR you can order your own copy of it for only $0.75/issue through my blog thanks to Lady Ann-Marie.  Seriously people?  It is worth it.

This month there was a great article about how to “Save money all around the house” this summer on page 11.  Here’s a sampling of some of the great tips:

In the kitchen:

  • Cool it.  Because your refrigerator has to work harder to cool down warm food – which wastes energy – let leftovers sit on the counter before putting them in the fridge.  To avoid the growth of dangerous bacteria, set a timer for 30 to 45 minutes to tip you off when your food will be the right temperature.  Don’t leave food out longer than two hours.
  • Fill your freezer.  A half-empty freezer expends extra energy to chill the unused space.  Store bags of ice in any vacant spots.
In the living room and bedrooms:
  • Rearrange the room.  Don’t put anything that generates heat (such as lamps or televisions) near your thermostat.  It will sense warmth from those items and prompt the AC to run longer than necessary.
  • Cover the windows.  Install white shades, drapes or blinds to reflect heat away from the house.  Close window treatments during the day to keep rooms cool.
Outdoors:
  • Clean up the right way.  Use a bucket of water – not a hose – to wash your car or bicycle.  A hose can go through 6 gallons of water per minute if you leave it running, whereas a bucket and sponge require only a few gallons at a time.
  • Take advantage of nature.  Plant deciduous trees on the south and west sides of your home to block the sun.
