The Easter season is upon us! It’s a wonderful time of the year to celebrate New Life and gather with family and friends. However, like any holiday, it can be a tempting opportunity to over do it and overspend, too. This year, you can have a meaningful celebration without the extra expense and excess.
Easter Egg Ideas
Many families decorate eggs to get into the festive spirit. The seasonal aisles are stacked full of kits to dye and enhance this kitchen staple. Pinterest and YouTube have enough ideas to make your head spin. But, you might have everything you need already to make amazing eggs this season.
Temporary Tattoos
If your family is anything like mine, you have a cabinet filled with stickers, temporary tattoos, and stamp pads. These can easily transform an egg with very little effort. This year, I actually purchased Printable Temporary Tattoo Paper for a birthday party and then I didn’t end up using it. So we created unique images of our own to put on eggs. If you order paper like that (or already have some), here are a few quick tips:
- Be sure to reverse the image before printing.
- The sticky paper is really tricky to work with. Proceed with care.
- Choose images that are smaller and then trim them carefully.
- Use the paper to gently rub the edges down.
But you don’t have to order the paper, you can use any tattoos that you find at home or pick up at the dollar store. Be sure that your eggs are completely cooled and dry and then apply straight to the surface. I’m totally non-crafty and I was able to pull it off.
Stickers, Stamps, Markers, & More!
You can easily decorate eggs with a simple sharpie, a stamp pad, or even stickers. Don’t stress out over making Faberge, Pinterest perfect eggs. Instead, let the kids have fun with their art supplies and create one-of-a-kind works of art. The best part about using washable ink pads and stamps is that you can gently clean the stamps off with just water and a paper towel and decorate them again and again. You could also use Washi tape or ribbon you already have to wrap around your eggs, too.
Get Your Glow On
Want to host an egg hunt that they never forget? Use fill simple plastic eggs with glow sticks and hide them at night! Whether in the yard or throughout your house, your kids will love looking high and low for the glow.
3 Can’t Miss Ways to Save Money This Easter!
Use What You Already Have
This is the perfect week to have a little hunt of your own. Clear the cabinets and the closets looking for decor, eggs, and other supplies from last year. The week after our girls first Easter, we purchased nice baskets on clearance that we use every single year. We spent less than $5 on each of them and they’re still going strong. If you don’t have too many items, purchase as few as possible and wait until after the season passes to pick up a bargain to use next year. If you love the traditional Easter egg decorating kits, you’ll be able to pick them up for a song mere days after Easter has passed and put them back for the next year. Just be sure you have a designated area where you store holiday decor and items so that you can find them when you need them!
Know What to Skip
I promise you, you don’t need everything in the holiday aisle to have a very happy Easter this year. All of us have to exercise self-control. It’s OK to have fun and honor traditions together as a family but if any items will be purchased and then expressly thrown away *cough* cellophane Easter grass *cough.* You should probably skip it. Candy will be conspicuously placed in your path at every store. You don’t need bags and bags. In fact, if you overbuy candy, you can count on needing to buy new pants, too. You also need to be wise when it comes to your holiday meal. Limit yourself to a main dish or meat, a vegetable, a fruit, a bread, and a dessert. It’s easy to go side crazy and purchase way more than necessary. Question each seasonal item you place in your cart before you head to the check out.
Maximize Grocery Deals
Stores will be fighting for your holiday dollars this week. That means, they’ll have all sorts of fantastic deals on staples used to celebrate on Easter Sunday. If you have the budget, it’s a great week to stock up on items like eggs, ham, strawberries, oranges, asparagus, and specialty breads. Remember, many items (even milk) can be frozen until you’re ready to use them. Those low prices provide an affordable feast but can help you feed your family throughout the spring, too.
You don’t have to spend tons of money to have a worthwhile observance of Easter. In fact, you might be missing the entire point of the awesomeness of Easter if you do.
How do you keep the experience significant without going overboard? What are your favorite traditions that don’t break the bank?
