Welcome WTHR Weekend Sunrise Viewers: Super Big Game, Super Big Savings

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

Catch me tomorrow morning on WTHR Weekend Sunrise at 7:45 AM!  Here’s a sneak peek of some of the money saving tips I’ll share.

It’s the one night of the year when even non-football fans rejoice in partying it up over the grid iron.  But if you’re throwing a bash, you don’t want to get sacked financially.  Let’s make sure you throw a fete to remember that says “Touchdown” not one that has you upside down.
1) You Don’t Need a New TV.  Advertisers are going to spend ALL week trying to convince you to buy a big screen.  There will be slashed prices, special deals, and payment plans galore.  Please promise me you won’t buy anything on credit for four hours of viewing pleasure.  No game or commercial is worth extra hours worked trying to pay off interest.  On the flipside if you are in the market for a new TV and have CASH to pay for it, might be a good week to pick one up.  I’ve been scanning the deals on Amazon.  Did you know that Target recently announced they will price match {for exact items} Amazon?!  This might be a great opportunity to take advantage of that new policy and your new screen without the wait.
2) Decorate with What You Have.  Got an old jersey laying around?  Nerf football sitting idly on the shelf waiting for spring?  Pull out any and every football item from cleats to footballs, from Jerseys to clumps of grass from the yard in dish {did anyone else see Ray Lewis eat that grass during the first round of the playoffs?!}, and you can make a center piece without spending a dime.  I put together some great decorating ideas {including some printables you could use to decorate} on Pinterest.
3) Coupon It Up!  Buy your Sunday paper today or check the coupons on the internet!  There are so many snack coupons floating around right now, it’s not funny.  From Doritos to Chex Mix, you can munch it up on the cheap.  I’d suggest something simple like stovetop popcorn for a large crowd to dine on the cheap.  But there are also recipes and food ideas galore on Pinterest.  From a cupcake inside of an egg died to look like a football {too much work for me} to stadiums built from snack food.  You can get creative, do the work yourself {skip buying a pizza or restaurant foods}.  There are even snack food sales going on on Amazon right now.
4) Free Pizza from Papa John’s {day after}.  Be sure to get your pick in for the coin toss.  If you choose correctly, you’ll receive a coupon for a FREE pizza on Monday when you register here.  Who wants to cook on Monday after they’ve stayed up SO late the night before?
5) Pitch In.  Don’t feel like you have to feed an army.  Ask your guests to contribute something to your Super feast.  From bringing their own choice beverage, to a side dish {we always ask people to choose to bring either something sweet or salty}, it’s more fun when everyone brings a little something of their own to share.  You can divide the alphabet up by last name to determine who brings what, create a menu, build a theme like Taco Night, Appetizers, or Chili Cook Off.  Just get a plan together today and send out an e-mail so everyone’s creative culinary juices can flow.  Nom nom nom.
Watch for commercials, deals, and sales this week.  Set a cash budget.  Don’t go overboard {it’s so easy to do!}.  And most of all remember that you’re bringing people together to have fun which will happen no matter the size of your tv, the quality of your decor, or the amount of food. How do you Super Save when it comes to the Super Big Game?
