Let’s Go to the Movies!

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

I posted earlier this month how sad I was that our local AMC is not participating in Summer Movie Camp this summer.  So I’ve been doing some research on other theaters’ programs.  Here are my top suggestions:

  • If you live on the Southside of Indianapolis, Franklin’s Canary Creek Cinemas has its own Summer Movie Camp (click “Click here for Free Summer Movie Camp”).  Flicks are free.  Doors open @ 9:30 AM on Wednesdays throughout the summer and the movie starts at 10.  Here’s what’s left on their schedule: Alvin and the Chipmunks, Igor, Madagascar 2, Delgo, The Tale of Despereaux, Paul Blart Mall Cop, Hotel for Dogs, and Monsters vs. Aliens.  And I didn’t realize they also have a Drive In there!  That sounds like great summer fun and a non-guilty way for me to bring my own snacks to the theater.  🙂
  • Regal Entertainment’s Free Family Film Festival features movies on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the summer months.  Go here for locations and movie schedules.  Thanks to Hey It’s Free!
  • Rave Movie Theaters also have a Free Family Film Festival on Tuesdays and Wednesdays @ 10 AM.  Schedule and locations here.  Plainfield’s Metropolis is nearest to us.
  • Kerasotes also has a Summer Movie Series on Wednesdays and Thursdays @ 10 AM.  Glendale is the only Indy area location that I see.  And sorry to the Terre Haute folks, you’re out on this one, too.  Times and locations (all states) here.
  • Cinemark Theaters  offer an opportunity for $0.50 movie/week this summer.  Go here for participating states, locations, times, and dates.  For our Cinemark (the dollar theater) it’s every Wednesday and you can either pay $1 or buy a pass for all 10 movies for $5.
  • Hauteans do know that the Historic Indiana Theater features Wednesday Summer Movies at both 10 AM and 2:30 PM throughout the summer.  Just promise me you’ll go to Roly Poly for me after you see a flick, ok?  Meadows Theaters are also offering free summer flicks on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10 AM.  Go here for shows by date.
  • Our Library is featuring outdoor movies this summer (you may want to call the library or ask a librarian for specifics as there are some conflicts in their scheduling online/in library).  The Indianapolis Marion County Public Library is featuring movies this summer, too.  Click on the movie title for dates/times/places for each flick.  Check your library for possibilities near where you are.
  • Indianapolis Parks and Rec Department are also showing movies in the Park all summer Long.  Go here, click on any of the guides and go to page 11 for a listing.  There are also some “big people” movies which would make for a great free date!  Check your Local Parks Department for possibilities near you.
  • It’s not a free flick but Carmike Theaters (I used to go to this one on an almost daily basis 1995-1999) is offering Stimulus Tuesdays Where Popcorn and Drinks are only $1.
Hopefully you’ll be able to use one of these resources to catch a flick for free this summer.  Think of the Queen when you do.

My family loves Canary Creek Drive-In. We have 4 kids 5 and under but we only have to pay $7 each for my husband and I. Many times they have kid friendly movies first and then and adult movie second. Usually by the time the second one starts all of my kids are asleep. We love movies and it is a great way for us to go and not spend too much money. We can spend over $50 when we go inside and then buy popcorn and drinks for everyone. We still buy popcorn and stuff from inside but it seems worth it when we’ve saved so much by going to the drive-in.

Lady Krista that is awesome! 🙂 So they don’t charge for your kiddos 5 and under? How cool is that! Sounds like a fun summer night. Thanks for sharing.
