What Do You Do Wednesday? Goal Setting

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

September 2, 2009 By Cherie Lowe

So my dear new Bloggy friend Lady Heather who is the creative genius behind Inexpensively, the Network of Frugal Bloggers where I’m a contributor (you should probably read that Bio I wrote; it will make your day infinitely better) has me thinking.  And it’s not just because she looks totally awesome when flanked by Storm Troopers.

Heather and her Hubs, have started a site called called Someday I Want where they encourage you to do some specific goal setting for your life.  In particular, I have decided to develop what they call a 40×40 list.  40 Goals that I would love to accomplish by the time that I turn 40.  Now, I will turn 33 this fall and so I figure I’ve got a little over 7 years to accomplish these goals SO it shouldn’t hard to break them down and make it happen, right?  Some of my goals are short and simple, some are lofty and will take some serious work.  But a little bit of work over a long period of time can yield AMAZING results, whether it’s getting into shape, getting out of debt, or building a personal project or movement.

What about you?  What do you do to set goals and achieve them?  How do you reach for those things you’ve always wanted to do?  Or better yet, comment with one of the things you’d love to put on a 40×40 (or 30×30 or 50×50 or whatever) list!  I’d love to know what your goals are and how you’d like to achieve them.

As a side note I have to admit that it took me about a week to achieve my goal of writing a post about goal setting which is kind of amusing right?  I had a goal in mind and it didn’t happen on my timetable.  It was a great lesson sticking with a goal when life gets in the way.  🙂  Hopefully you’ll think about setting a few goals of your own today.

I’m a very goal-oriented person-until my babies were born. I’m sure many out there know how (wonderfully) full your days can be with your child(ren) and one day can run into the next. I think a 40×40 list would be great for me. For instance, I’ve said for awhile now I’d like to have our mortgage paid off by the time I’m 40. I’ve got 8 years left to reach it and we’re on one income right now, so it seems iffy, but I’m stubborn. I’m going to try anyway. Who knows what can happen in 8 years, right? Right now, I’m working on losing weight. My sons don’t have the same nap schedule, so it’s tricky, but most days/week, I can take 30-45 minutes to exercise.

I like to make a list of my goals so I can get that oh-so-proud of myself feeling when I get to check them off. Plus, it’s like a personal contract. It’s in writing and it’s staring me in the face when I go to the fridge. Plus, I share my goals with family and friends so I have some accountability. The weight loss is slow going, but it’s going. Best wishes to all of you striving to reach your goals.

Wait…you’re a redhead AND you got rid of $30,000 in debt in 18 months?!? How did I not realize that until reading your Inexpensively.com bio (where my pal Katie represents KY)? Now we must be friends. 😀
