Save Money at the Movies

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

From buying gift cards under face value to free screening opportunities, you can save money at the movies with these simple strategies!

From big screen blockbusters to small independent films, movies fill our lives with entertainment and joy. But the experience of going to the movies or even watching them at home can just as easily empty our pockets. Beyond sneaking in your own snacks and hitting the matinee, there are plenty of ways to save money at the movies and make the most of every penny. Check out my favorite strategies to save.

Gift Card Treasure Hunt

More than half of adults have unused gift cards, the average amount per person amounts to around $116. While your gift cards may not be specifically for your theater, you may have some in your wallet or desk drawer that can be used anywhere – including the movies. Spend some time checking your balances. Take a sharpie and write the updated amount on the outside of the gift card so you have a record. A task that takes less than 15 minutes could result in a trip to the movies on a dime. You can also pick up movie theater gift cards under face value at warehouse stores like Sam’s Club and Costco.

Join Disney Movie Insiders

I’ve earned so many great little gift cards and perks over the years by being a member of Disney Movie Insiders. When you link different theater accounts like Regal Crown Club, Atom Rewards, and Fandango VIP, not only will you get rewards points but you’ll get automatically rewarded when you see participating films in theaters. Viewing at Disney, Pixar, Marvel, or Star Wars flick at a different theater? Simply snap a photo of your ticket stub and upload them to get up to 150 points per ticket. You can also get reward points for DVD purchases and even purchasing Disney+ Premier movies via streaming at home.

Look for Local Independent Theaters

There are plenty of great movie theaters locally in Indianapolis. And theaters like these often run special deals for audiences. I highly recommend getting to know your nearest theater’s website. Join email lists and follow the theater on social media channels to keep abreast of any updates. This will be especially handy when it comes to Summer Movie Camp experiences for kids in the coming months.

Move Beyond the Theater

You can see a classic flick or even slightly lesser release in a non-theater setting. Your local library often hosts screenings of movies for free. Or restaurants even have special movie nights/days for families, too. Check out Indy Books and Brews locally for their showings. And begin checking out the local parks departments and museums for outdoor movie options this summer, too! These free or low cost events help keep your entertainment budget afloat while providing a great time.

Attend Free Screenings

Want to see a new flick before anyone else and go for free? Check out programs that allow you to do both. Three reliable websites to check out if you’re interested in signing up include Gofobo.com and SeeItFirst.net. Each program works slightly differently but primarily depend upon having quick access to your email when movies become available.

Eat Before You Go

While it’s fun to splurge on snacks every once and awhile – especially when you purchase them with rewards points – most of the time the food at the movie theater is overpriced. You could purchase a week’s worth of beverages for what you’d pay on one drink. Think ahead and have a healthy snack before you go to the movies. You’ll be able to give your full attention to what’s on the screen and both your body and budget will thank you.

Time Your Movie Well

Many theaters offer more affordable tickets to their films earlier in the day or on special days of the week. Head to your theater’s website to investigate matinee prices. You may also discover discounts on particular days of the week for senior citizens, students, or general audiences.

Going to the movies can be a part of your budget. You may need to exercise some restraint and creativity, but you can still enjoy a flick with the family without breaking the bank.
