Smart phone or flip phone? iPhone or Android? Unlimited talk time? Unlimited data? Exactly how much is a gigabyte anyway? So I need to switch carriers? What about tablets? When it comes to mobile technology, most of us have more questions than a hyperactive four year old. It can be confusing at best and misery at worst to determine which path is most cost effective. More than likely, once we’ve locked into a particular plan and device, we rarely look at the bill or consider changing our ways. While I can’t answer all of your questions about cell phones (especially that gigabyte one), there are ways to save money and make the most of your plan when it comes to mobile devices.
Evaluate First
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the release of a new device or piece of technology. Before you pitch your tent in a long line outside of the store, really evaluate your needs. Does your current phone work? Do you know how to use it to the fullest potential? Keep in mind that in a matter of months, the latest and greatest will be replaced and there will be another line to join.
Read Your Bill
You absolutely need to read your bill before making any decisions about plans. How many texts are you sending? How many minutes do you use? I can’t promise that it will read like a New York Times Bestseller, but if you don’t read your bill on a regular basis, you’re begging the provider to take all of your hard earned cash.
Check Out in Store Educational Offerings
Some service providers offer free classes or workshops to help you efficiently use your phone or tablet. Go to your store and see if they offer these types of experiences. If you don’t have time to take a class or one is not currently offered, head to YouTube for online video tutorials. You might be surprised to learn a few new hacks to help you make better use of your current device.
Purchase Your Device
In the last couple of years, companies have offered an enticing plan for technology junkies. Essentially, you pay for your cell phone or tablet with a lower upfront cost in the form of a monthly payment. While a little less painful to swallow at first, you’ll end up purchasing your device multiple times over if you choose this option. You’re better off saving up your pennies to actually pay the entire price upfront than going the quick and seemingly easy route.
Opt for the WiFi When You Can
Almost every wireless device can operate on WiFi. WiFi connections seem to be almost everywhere now, from homes to the library to your local big box retailer to the mall. So instead of paying for a pricey data plan, choose the smallest option possible and use the WiFi instead. It takes a little discipline to turn your mobile connection on and off but it can be done (pssst, this is what I do). You’ll save much more in the long run.
Consider refurbished or used technology
You don’t have to buy a brand new phone. If your provider offers a free upgrade, by all means, snap up that offer. However, you can purchase a gently used phone or tablet online, too. Most carriers allow you to use any phone that was formerly in their network. This means if your phone breaks, you can use anyone else’s from that carrier until your renewal period arrives. Simply take that phone into the store and they’ll switch it over to your number.
As with any consumer investment, it pays to do your research before arriving in a store. Have a good idea of your needs and the plans available. Be kindly firm with a representative to stay your ground when it comes to how much you want to spend. Communication has come a long way since Alexander Graham Bell. Take every step you can to ensure you don’t overpay for this great gift.
