Easter is just around the corner! If you’re anything like me, you might find yourself caught off guard and without the supplies you need to decorate and dye eggs. This year if you’re in a pinch, here are a few out-of-the-box ideas to help celebrate the season without spending a bundle. You might even have some of these items at home. Check out my favorite ways to save on Easter eggs.

Start With a Muffin Tin & A Whisk

So many of those kits you can buy at the store have individual cups to clean up and might end up making a big mess. You can simplify by using a muffin tin to color your eggs this year. You can also use a more sturdy whisk to dip them into the colors instead of the wire dipper that comes with a kit.

Kool-Aid

We use white vinegar for almost everything in our household from fabric softener to glass cleaner. This year, you can opt for a much more pleasant smell when you dye your Easter eggs. Choose Kool Aid instead! There are some flavors to avoid (Lemonade, Pink Lemonade, and Grape), but you can find the full directions on how to make it happen here.

Temporary Tattoos

My kids always seem to have a few temporary tattoos hiding in their desk drawers or with art supplies. Instead of buying expensive transfer kits, you can use temporary tattoos and even stickers to adorn your eggs. Check out these AWESOME ways to save money on Easter Eggs and decorate them beautifully using items you might already have at home!

Washi Tape

For the crafty kids in the house, you can pinstripe your eggs with extra washi or colorful tape.

Old Nail Polish

There always seems to be an old bottle of nail polish in our cabinet. This year, your kids could use up that nail polish and have some Easter fun at the same time.

Permanent Markers

The kids will have a ball even simply using permanent markers to create their own unique Easter Eggs. Fine tip markers will allow you to draw ornate designs while the broader tipped markers make it easier to fill in the egg.

Bring Eggs to Room Temperature

As a side note, be sure you bring your eggs to room temperature before you boil them. This will help you avoid the tragic experience of cracking and wasting eggs that need to be decorated!

Add Glow Sticks to Plastic Eggs

Want to skip the dye process? Add glow sticks to plastic eggs instead for an after hours egg hunt. Use a bracelet, or if you can smaller glow stick (I found teeny ones for flying discs that fit perfect!). Be sure that you don’t activate the glow stick until right up until the last minute. Then, curve them to squeeze them into an egg. The kids will LOVE this simple trick!

If you want to buy a traditional kit, look ahead to next year. A few days after Easter, everything will be on clearance and you can stock up. But there are always ways to decorate without breaking the bank.

What other ideas would you suggest? How do you save on decorating Easter eggs?
