What a special treat! Some words from the King of Free today. It’s a speech (I envision it Braveheart-style) certain to stir your heart if you feel overwhelmed or discouraged. We don’t just encourage living simply (even after you pay off debt), we live it. We hope this encouragement for those in debt gives you the boost you need today. Who we are
We are the people who paid off $127K in debt. That was 2 ½ years ago. A lot has changed during that time but so much remains the same. Here is our heart for you who are in the midst of your own debt slaying battle, for you who feel discouraged or down. You can do it. And we abide with you in the midst of your struggle.
A life of freedom is better than a life of bondage.
Living in excess is just a different set of chains.
For us, it’s also disingenuous.
We cannot preach contentment and live in excess. We cannot tell you to live frugally when we are living frivolity. Our personal methods must coincide, and be consistent with our public message. We can’t forget where we came from and where those who are listening may be. We can’t post selfies with fancy meals while people are eating PB every day just so they can pay the light bill. That’s not who we are. Here’s who we are. Not just who we were when we were scraping every last penny to slay the debt dragon, but who we still are.
We are the people who have no consumer debt, increased income and still make conscious daily frugal choices.
We are the people who choose to live in a 1300 square foot house. We’re not going anywhere.
We are the people who still choose to sleep on the same mattress for the last 15 years (the mattress may be older than that).
We are the people who drive “old” well-loved automobiles.
We are the people who still clip coupons, shop at Aldi and never pay retail.
We are the people who spent six dollars to spray paint a cabinet instead of taking a day trip to Ikea.
We are the people who still pack our lunches almost every day.
We are the people who still bristle at the word restaurant.
We are the people who believe frugality is a spiritual discipline.
We are the people who will not lead you by our action, inaction, word or deed to spend money you don’t have for the sole purpose of our own pecuniary gain.
We are the people who believe that God wastes nothing and we shouldn’t either.
We are the people that believe you lead by example.
We are the people who can afford to live different than this but don’t, because we have a calling. Our calling is to set the captives free. Living our own lives contrary to this calling would be living the high life on the broken backs of broken people.
We are authentic.
We believe in you.
