Fireworks, parties, bunting, and flags . . . the summer is coming to a midpoint and this week, we’ll be marking the U.S.A.’s birthday. Certainly, we all love 4th of July fun, but how do you keep money in your pocket while still having a great time with friends and family? I’m so glad you asked. Here are some of my favorite ways to save green while celebrating the red, white, and blue.
Save Money on 4th of July Celebrations
Stick with Red Decor
The flag seems to be decorating every plate, pitcher, and kids’ t-shirt from the beginning of the summer through July 4th. When choosing such items, it’s better to use a red item that can be used again and again and again than purchasing a 4th of July specific piece. Red can be used with nearly every holiday (Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, etc.), many character themes (Mickey Mouse, Thomas the Train, Mario, Strawberry Shortcake), as well as a wide variety of sports teams (Cubs, IU, Cincinnati Reds, Cardinals, The Ohio State University, Ball State). Choosing reusable red items will save you in the long run. If you do choose bunting or an outdoor flag of some sort, it’s a good idea to get the antiqued variety rather than the vibrant colors. When the weather fades the fabric,at least it will still look old and intentionally so.
Keep Fireworks Purchases to a Minimum
On no other holiday do we spend money on an item that will be intentionally burned almost immediately. I still love a sparkler but if you can, keep your fireworks purchases to a minimum. Head to the free displays instead (Here’s a round up of The Best Places to See Fireworks in Indy). Or if you absolutely must buy some of your own, wait until July 5th when your spirit is still festive and the prices are slashed.
Ask Guests to Pitch-In
It’s note rude to ask your guests to bring a dish or two to your parties. In fact, it can be rather fun. Whether you choose a specific theme (Backyard BBQ, appetizers, salads) or you assign by letter of the alphabet (A-M brings something salty and N-Z brings a sweet treat), let your guests choose something they’d love to bring rather than assigning specific dishes. Their creative juices and go-to dish will bring the best variety to your table and somehow the food seems to multiply. Even if you only request that they bring their own beverages, you can slice several dollars of the price of your party without sacrificing quality.
Set a Budget for Festival Food
Admit it. You never feel that great after coming home when you’ve eaten two corn dogs, an elephant ear, and a lemon shakeup the size of your head. If you can, avoid the festival food altogether. But if you want to splurge a little, at least set a cash budget so that you don’t over-do it physically or financially. Pack a picnic basket with your favorites or at a minimum bring some bottled water with you so that you don’t end up spending more than necessary.
Don’t Go Overboard on the Speciality Items or in the Dollar Section
Flags and headbands, hats and sunglasses, you can find all things 4th of July themed right now. As cute as it may look on July 4th, by July 5th you’ll be either storing or pitching the items. Try not to go hog wild on the holiday goods with the knowledge that they’re only going to last you a day or two.
