Probably now more than ever, we’re feeling the call to escape. But a safe weekend getaway is a little more tricky right now. And even if you feel confident about venturing out into the world, it’s not the best time for your finances to overspend. If you want to travel close to home, but are low on ideas of how to stay safe and save cash, here are a few strategies to consider.
Take a Day Trip
If you’re not up for spending the night in a hotel or you can’t afford the extra expense, consider taking a trip for just the day. Pack the car the night before. Load up on snacks. Choose a destination and then hit the road. Think through where you might stop for food and/or use the bathroom. Be sure to have plenty of hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes on hand.
Explore the Great Outdoors
Most experts agree that it’s a better idea to be outside than inside right now. More than ever, I’ve seen photos flood my social media feed of families hiking, canoeing, biking, and exploring together. It’s a great idea to head to a state or local park to enjoy the great outdoors.
Take a Trip Back in Time
If you grew up in this area, consider revisiting places of significance. Share with your kids the playground you loved. Or visit the first place you kissed your significant other or other landmarks from when you first met. From the house you grew up in to driving past where you went to elementary school, a little trip down memory lane can shape up for a fun weekend.
Head to the Orchard
Most people think of apple picking in the fall, but a lot of local orchards feature summer fare, too. And some have great outdoor spaces to explore, too. Pick up some locally grown fruits and veggies to enjoy when you get back home, too. The Apple Works in Trafalgar is our favorite!
Look for Nearby Oddities
Did you know that the world’s largest mailbox is a short drive away from Indianapolis? Along with a host of other world’s largest items, you can find it in Casey, IL. Create a fun list of roadside stops and don’t miss your opportunity for epic selfies with each one. Check out this Indiana Tourist and Oddities Index for ideas.
Drive In Fun
Movies, ice cream, great food – there’s plenty you can enjoy without getting out of the car. Make a day of enjoying some drive in stops. Here’s a roundup of some Indiana Drive In Theaters. And here are some great Indiana Drive In Restaurant options.
Look for Hotel Deals
There are plenty of hotel deals to be had right now if you do have the budget to spend and feel comfortable spending the night. In fact, many Indy area hotels are offering up to 50% off their regular rates to Hoosier residents. Check out the deals here. Remember to avoid high traffic areas like restaurants, gyms, and even elevators when you can.
Our weekends may look a little different right now. But it doesn’t mean you need to stay cooped up inside. And it doesn’t mean you need to overspend either. Explore the world outside your door and save a buck or two while you’re at it.
