How Do the Royal Gardens Grow?

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

June 4, 2012 By Cherie Lowe

The Red Box is the original box we built.  The other 3 have been added over the last few years.
One box is empty waiting to be filled with the special mix of soils the King of Free fancies.

I’m definitely far from being a farmer but over the last 3-4 years, we have come to love Square Foot Gardening.  In fact, when we first moved to our home it had the most. beautiful. flower. gardens. ever.  Think botanical gardens beautiful.  And two ornamental fish ponds.  Within a week, we had killed one of the Koi fish {those things are supposed to live for 30ish years} and over the last 9 years, I’ve strategically killed off every flower bed that was planted on our 1.5 acres of the Queendom.  This year, we’re removing the fish ponds.  Anyone want to buy them?

It’s not that I hate flowers.  I really do like them.  I just don’t enjoy weeding flower beds and all of the work that comes along with landscaping.  I could think of 101 other things I’d love to be doing {including both push mowing and weed eating} than working in a flower bed.

On the other hand, if work produces food, I’m a bit more hip on the idea.  So 3 or 4 years ago, the King of Free built me my first Square foot bed and we’ve now added 4 more raised beds.

I’m late on planting seeds in the garden this season but this past weekend, but with the cool weather, I don’t think we’re out much.  We’ll just harvest late into August instead of in July.  Currently I’ve planted Zucchini, Cucumbers, Green Beans, Cilantro, Onions, Basil, Sunflowers, Parsley, and Peas all from seeds we already had stored in our refrigerator from last year.

We had an onion stay on through the winter that is nice and large, 3 strawberry plants, and an Oregano bush that will NOT quit growing.  It’s the large green you see above.  I cut so much of it off, I’m sure I heard Luigi and Mario crying.  There’s also a very small basil plant in the one box {where most of the herbs are planted} which appears to be all by itself for right now.

In our other bed, we planted several things from plant.  There are 8 Tomato plants {I had 3 other Romas that got eaten by an animal a couple of weeks ago . . . rascally wabitts!} and 1 pepper plant.  I have one other one to plant in there, too.  Plus I planted some beans and peas in this one, too.

Hopefully over the next couple of weeks, I can share pictures with you of our growing garden.

Interested in Square Foot Gardening?  Check out All New Square Foot Gardening.  It’s what we used to figure out how to build boxes, “make” our soil, and get the most out of our experience.  I say “we” but really the King of Free has done both all the reading and most of the work.  I do the planting and the tending and he does a fabulous job with all the rest.  What a peach!
