There’s nothing like consumer culture to make you think that in order to tell someone that you love them, you have to spend great amounts of money. Whether it’s Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or even Mother’s Day, marketing is out to tell you that you simply can’t tell someone how much you care without dropping a large amount of cash.
Now, this is not a problem if you actually have cash in your budget to spend. However, if you’re living frugally, paying off debt, or cutting back this might not be an option for you. Here are three of my favorite ways to celebrate Mothers everywhere without spending much at all.
1) Kids Crafts. Every grandmother loves a good craft, homemade card, or painted flower pot. The key to keeping the budget under control on this one is by looking around your house and using what you’ve already got instead of heading to your nearest craft store.
2) Kids Photos. It doesn’t cost much to print a photo these days or even create a collage. Refresh their frames with your favorite current snapshot.
3) Write a Letter. Our mothers might be disappointed if I post this and then don’t do it (I’ll do my best, I promise!). Your words mean much, much more than a trinket, gift book, gift card, or even dinner out on the town. Spend an hour or two penning a letter to your mom (either by long hand or computer). Tell her what you really feel. She’ll treasure it, remember it, and keep it much longer than any other gift you could give.
What do you do to celebrate Mother’s Day, intentionally showing your mom how much she means, without spending a lot of money?
