We’ve survived the wilds of figuring out how much you spend, we’ve trekked through the mountains of debt, we’ve found forgiveness for the wrongs we’ve done, we’ve surrounded ourselves with like minded debt slayers, we’ve asked for help on our quest, we’ve been honest, we’re in lock step with our spouse, and so much more on our 31 Day Debt Slaying journey. Today, it’s a lesson I have a hard time with a lot: keep your eyes on your own paper, and stop comparing answers.
Day 13: Keep Your Eyes on Your Own Paper
I’m shifting back to a slightly more philosophical view of debt slaying just for today. More practical tips for tomorrow, I promise.
It is absolutely essential that you stay laser sharp focused (kind of like laser rocket arms, but not) on your own personal debt slaying journey. I say this because when I hear of others paying off debt, I can be encouraged.
Sometimes.
But other times, the green eyed monster in me begins to make comparisons.
“Well did they really pay that off? Or did they inherit some cash? Or worse yet, pull out another loan to pay off that loan/credit card/debt?”
“I bet they make a lot more money than we do.”
Or on the opposite end of the spectrum:
“How in the world can they afford that?!”
“We’re barely making it and we could never go there!”
“Why do people who live irresponsibly seem blessed in spite of it?”
I can’t answer any of these questions. I can’t know anyone else’s debt load (unless they tell me). I can’t know what their payments are like. And bottom line, I don’t really need to know any of the above. It’s none of my business.
Their story is not my story. And neither is my story your story.
The best book I’ve read about paths and getting where you want to be. |
And so if someone pays off close to $25,000 in one year and you only make $30,000 there is ABSOLUTELY no reason for you to be discouraged, quit, give up, or think that you can’t make it out of debt.
Or if someone goes on a fantastic vacation to Disney and the envy monster sets in for you, let it go. You never know if they saved, paid cash, or someone gifted the trip to them.
And again, it’s not your road to travel. It’s not your battle to fight. It’s not the path you have embarked upon. It’s not your story.
Your story is uniquely yours. It is beautifully yours. And your debt slaying victory won’t hinge on anyone else either. That story belongs to you, too.
Eyes on your own paper or straight ahead, debt slayers. And chin up. You really don’t want anyone else’s story or life.
Do you struggle with staying focused on your journey? How do you keep the green eyed dragon at bay?
