As a kid, the first box of seasonal decor that I always wanted to unpack contained our collection of holiday books. Faithfilled and fictional, each of these seasonal stories still have a special place in my heart. As an adult, all of our Christmas books are packed in a tub labeled “OPEN ME FIRST!” so that we can begin our holiday season as simply as the first Christmas – with a story. Christmas themed stories are read nightly in our house every day in December (sometimes more than one).
Today on the Court of the Queen of Free on Facebook, I’ve been asking Money Saving Lords and Ladies what some of their favorite Christmas stories or books are. And it reminded me that last year I posted on some of our favorite Christmastime reads. So I polished up that post and added a new title to share with you today. However, I couldn’t limit myself to only three books so I apologize for a more lengthy than usual Thursday.
- A Story A Day ‘Til Christmas: This one is out of print but you can find some used copies out there either at Amazon or Half.com. We have the 1986 version that my mama read to me as a child. I remember it with great fondness and have enjoyed it even more with the Eldest Princess (a bit advanced for the toddler crowd). It includes both secular and sacred classic Christmas short stories and poetry. A lot of my favorites – “Yes Virginia There is a Santa Claus,” “The Gift of the Magi,” “The Tree that Didn’t Get Trimmed”, and “Christmas Bells” fill this great book that helps you countdown Christmas, storytime style.
- The Other Wiseman: A fable filled with great perspective of what it really means to bring gifts to the true King of Freedom.
- The Tale of the Three Trees: A folktale filled with insight on being made who you’re made to be and God’s great plan for your life, which often outpaces your own dreams or wishes.
- Jesus, Me, and My Christmas Tree: We have the boardback version so the Youngest Princess is getting acquainted with this story this year! It helps younger children celebrate the season by explaining how the tree in their living room just might have some significant symbols on its limbs.
- The Night Before the Night Before Christmas: A silly story that’s one of the Eldest Princess’ favorites. A family hurries and scurries around in preparation of Christmas only to have everything ruined?! My favorite stanza? “No sugarplum, these things are just stuff. Christmas is about love. And we have quite enough.”
- Small Camel Follows the Star: A young camel finds out why it was uniquely made during his long journey through the desert. I love this cute fable.
- Countdown To Christmas (My First Read and Learn) is a new addition to our collection this year and I LOVE it! The Youngest Princess has memorized the short stanza that begins each day which also includes a small portion of the Biblical story of Christmas, an easy and quick hands-on activity, a prayer, and a Bible verse. I can tell that this book will be a favorite of hers for the next 3-4 years.
Maybe one of these books will become a favorite in your family, too! Find them at the library or order a book on Amazon using a gift card gained from Swagbucks. They’ll definitely make your season brighter without spending or hurrying and scurrying.
These are books that I already own. I did not receive them for review or fulfill a request to review them for money, goods, or services.
