In our pursuit of paying off every penny of debt we owe, many extras have fallen to the wayside.  I honestly can’t remember when the King of Free and I last went to a movie.  It’s definitely been more than two years.  And of course, the King of Free hasn’t eaten at a restaurant all year long.  With the two biggest date night activities out of the realm of possibility for our budget, it can be challenging spending intentional time with one another.  Plus, we rarely can afford to get a sitter anyway.  Yet, we’ve found creative ways to spend time with each other and connect.  Here are a few of our favorite our thrifty date nights:

  • Renting a Redbox.  We love those handy one dollar rental stations.  And I always check out Inside Redbox for codes that can make your rental free.
  • Taking long walks.  Sounds super cheesy but we love to walk and *sigh* hold hands.  All we need is a beach, now.  🙂
  • Playing Wii, board games, and cards.  It doesn’t get much simpler than a hand Phase 10, some Lego Star Wars, or a round of Monopoly.  We’ve been known to take the money we would have spent on eating out or going to a movie and use it to purchase a game that we can play over and over again.

  • Making dinner together.  Cooking together is a lot of fun plus it gives us plenty of time to talk (communication is essential when you’re paying of debt and in order to have a happy marriage!) and enjoy a non-stressful evening.
Recently, we were able to fix some amazing Chinese food as a part of a date night courtesy of Wanchai Ferry and MyBlogSpark.  I was fairly skeptical at first and then pleasantly surprised at the end result.  I’m usually fairly picky about nutritional content and while I wouldn’t consider the Orange Chicken a healthfood dish, it wasn’t horrible for you, either.  Plus we threw in a few extra veggies to kick things up a notch.  And it was DELISH!  Let’s just say there weren’t any left overs.
