Freedom Friday: What Are Your Excuses?

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

August 20, 2010 By Cherie Lowe

Hear ye, hear ye, Money Saving Lords and Ladies!  It’s Freedom Friday where I bi-weekly share our progress in becoming completely debt free.  It’s also your turn to share your story of debt slaying.  Whether you’ve paid off every cent you owe, are just getting started, or live somewhere in the in between, we want to hear from you!  We’re better together, share your story and make us all stronger.

My day began by watching this video (thanks to Lady Adrienne) on Facebook.  Watch it, it’s only a minute and it’s definitely worth it.

After watching that (and then spending about 30 minutes watching other Nike ads that made me want to run around the house, try the high jump for the first time, box with Ali (Laila or Muhammad), and perhaps ride my bike or run across the country like a female Lance Armstrong/Forrest Gump), I began to think about how applicable this ad was to getting out of debt.  I had plenty of excuses when we began our debt slaying journey.

  • We just don’t make enough money.
  • We have things we need.
  • I want to provide a certain lifestyle for our kid(s)/family.
  • I don’t think the King of Free really knows how much our bills amount to every month.
  • We’re barely making it as it is.
  • What’s really the big deal with getting out of debt anyway?
  • The idea of this makes me uncomfortable and I don’t like it.
  • We will have NO fun ever. again.
  • It’s just too much.  We can’t do it.
A little over 2 years and well over $60K (we’ll be nearing 70 soon) paid off later, most of these excuses seem like bunk to me.  No, we didn’t make a lot of money when we started but we were able to better use what we had once we bit the bullet.  All of our needs have been provided.  Our kids live a wonderful life where time is valued over stuff and you save to get what you want.  The King of Free definitely now knows how much money comes in and out of the monthly ledger.  We felt like we were barely making it and now after “tightening our belts,” we feel blessed with abundance even living on less (what a reverse economy!).  The more we get out of debt, the more relieved I feel and the bigger deal I realize it was/is.  I’m also seeing the end game where we will have A LOT of expendable income every month after our debt is paid off to save, give, and spend.  I was SO uncomfortable with letting go of my notions of life (you have to have a car payment, everyone uses a credit card and it’s not that big of a deal, what’s another small payment for something you want when it’s no interest anyway?) and NOW I’m uncomfortable with the thought of all of those things.
And the fun thing?  This summer alone, I’ve flown upside down in a plane, gone on a behind the scenes tour of Indianapolis, and done a gazillion other things for FREE that wouldn’t have been possible if we weren’t on this journey.  It’s crazy ridiculous fun.
I will admit though that the very last excuse sticks in my craw somedays.  It still seems like a lot (even though we’re over the halfway hump now).  But knowing that all of my other excuses have been debunked gives me hope to shove away that one, too.
So what about you?  What’s your best excuse for not plowing through/eliminating/slaying/kick to the curb/clobbering/killing/dropping your debt?  I know Single Mom Money Saving Ladies who are on a path to success and who are killing it right now.  Why can’t you?  What’s holding you back?  Need to watch the video again?
Happy Freedom Friday everybody.  E-mail me your story to share on next week’s Freedom Friday.
