I’ve mentioned quite a few times before that I love the magazine All You. It has great money saving tips and a ton of coupons to boot! I’m especially excited that this month that one of my money saving tips was featured in its pages. I just got my copy in the mail last week and found this little blurb on page 20.
This is something the Royal Family does every fall! We host a Fall Party and guests bring a dish and plan an activity – a game, song, craft, or special tradition – to share with everyone in attendance. It takes the stress off of hosting and keeps our costs low. Plus we have a unique and wonderful family event.
I think that many people assume that if you’re on a budget you can’t live it up! It does take a certain amount of restraint (just say no to the cute party store decorations) and you have to be intentional about sticking to a budget for food and extras. But gathering with friends isn’t about what you spend, not even about what you eat, or what you do. It’s about simply being together. And that’s a joy that’s always free! When you share the load, everyone has a good time and you create a unique memory.
So if you’re thinking of planning a 4th of July celebration, I’d encourage you to adapt this model. Divide your guests by the alphabet (A-M brings something sweet, N-Z brings something salty) or ask for a covered side dish of some sort. Or even think about having the guests bring the “easy” items like plates, napkins, forks, ice, cups, etc. We also always encourage guests to our home to bring their own beverages since we’re boring beverage people (i.e. water, milk, coffee, and tea is all you get around here for the most part).
Bottom line, everyone is always happy to contribute! Don’t be afraid to ask. Enjoy your summer soirees. Keep ’em simple and don’t don’t bust your Royal Checking Account!
