Buff on a Budget: Be Careful of the Company You Keep or Why Can’t We Be Friends?

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

I mentioned last week that I felt like “Buff on a Budget” should be entitled “Behind on a Budget” lately.  I haven’t had much time to blog or felt like blogging on fitness.  There’s a couple of reasons and I think you’re entitled to them.

  1. If you’ve been following along on Indy’s Queen of Free, you know that I’ve been plagued with injury since beginning to train for the Mini Marathon.  First my knee.  Then my foot.  Then my foot again.  Sheesh.
  2. This made me feel more than a little bummed.  So it was hard to write about working out when I couldn’t work out like I wanted.
But I’m happy to say, I’m back on track.  And just in the nick of time since the One America 500 Festival Mini Marathon is on Saturday!  I’m not sure I’ll be able to run the entire route but I am pretty sure I can run and walk to finish.  I’m most worried about the last three miles so think happy thoughts and pray for me during that time!
This week’s frugal fitness tip is really birthed out of a podcast I’ve been listening to from North Point Community Church called Guardrails.  Now before you shut me out if you’re not a big fan of churches, this podcast isn’t all religiony.  It has great tips on living life in general.  And the speaker – Andy Stanley – had some great advice that is applicable for fitness and it’s absolutely free.  In the second week, “Why Can’t We Be Friends,” Stanley talks about how much our friends impact who we are.
We let our guard down when we’re around friends.  And that’s a good thing.  We all need people we can trust.  But when we choose friends who don’t value the same food and fitness goals, and then let our guard down we share their values.  It’s a pretty simple principle and I’m sure you can automatically think of friends who both encourage and discourage you from your fitness goals.
It’s great to have a fitness buddy – either someone you meet in real life or someone who encourages you via the internet.  Lady Jules has been indispensable while I’ve been training for the Mini and she lives in KY about 3.5 hours away from me.  We haven’t had the chance to run together but she’s made great suggestions and encouraged me when I need it.  She’s a great friend to let my guard down around.  Pretty much nothing is off limits.  A fitness buddy is absolutely free and can make a world of difference! Find one today.
And thanks Lady Jules.  You’re a rock star.
