The Queen’s Christmas Challenge

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

November 8, 2008 By Cherie Lowe

This year, as most years, we attempt to spend as little as possible on Christmas.  It doesn’t mean we wrap up old toys for our kids (although the thought has crossed my mind with the youngest princess who won’t remember anyway); however, it does mean that we shop for bargains and we buy few things.  Long ago before we were even frugal, we decided to purchase only 3 items for Christmas for the eldest princess.  One item is usually large-r, two smaller gifts, and then the stocking and we’re done.  The King also purchases pjs as his Christmas Eve gift, too.  Overall, we keep it simple.

Anyway, this year, I’m on a challenge to do the majority of our spending with gift cards that we obtain for “free.”  We have obtained one $25 Walgreens gift card already by switching one of the King’s prescriptions from CVS (sorry CVSing girls, we needed to make a shift for several reasons).  We’ll switch the other one this month and get another one, too.  We’re almost up to a $50 gift card from our debit card points (read a total of $100 in gift cards so far).  I have the opportunity to test drive a Saturn and get a $35 Target gift card.  And now, let me share with you a couple of great opportunities to de-clutter your house and get gift cards!
Flip Swap is an organization that takes your old cell phones and iPods, and gives you gift cards for Amazon.com.  Woot, woot.  Go here and they will walk you through the process of seeing how much yours is worth, mailing it in, and receiving your gift card.
Today, I read another post on Money Saving Mom where Sam’s Club does something similar with your old electronics – desktops, laptops, printers, digital cameras, camcorders, monitors, gaming systems, MP3 players and more.  They will help you calculate what you get, tell you how to send it in, and then send you gift cards.  Here’s the direct link to Sam’s program.
Hope these few tips help you save a little dough this Christmas!
