Oh how we love the dads, grandpas, and father figures in our lives. And once a year, we drive ourselves crazy trying to figure out what to get them that won’t break the bank, but still pays tribute to the significant role they’ve played in our lives. After all, the last thing dad would want you to do is to buy something he doesn’t need or want or spend too much money on him. These simple and creative ideas will help you rock your 2022 Father’s Day Gifts. Dad will feel special but be proud of you for not going overboard, too.
Skip the Knick Knacks and Fancy Wrapping
Spoiler alert: most dads don’t care about the gift bag. If you have a present to give your dad this year, consider opting for a more practical wrapping or nixing it all together. Toolboxes, oil pans, tackle boxes, or even a backpack might be a better fit. Or you could consider wrapping a larger gift in newspaper or even with brown kraft paper. The kids could even use markers, stickers, or stamps to decorate those surfaces. And while the singing toys in the Father’s Day aisle are cute, they’re likely to be played with for a day or two and then chucked in the closet.
Fill the Fridge With His Favs
Whether your dad loves steak or veggies, coffee or iced tea, every fella has a fav. Hit the grocery aisles to choose dad’s favorite snacks, proteins, ice cream, and everything in between. In the past, I’ve bought my dad an assortment of individual bottles of root beer and Dilly Bars from the DQ. When possible, purchase items with a long shelf life (or that can be frozen) to ensure they won’t spoil before dad gets a chance to chow down.
Hit the Car Wash
In our family, a clean car is an extravagance. You may choose to clean dad’s car out at home. Don’t forget to vacuum all the corners and crevices! The kids can help wipe down surfaces and take out any trash. And you may have what you need to do the final wash at home. Or you might choose to head to the nearest car wash to finish the job. Many are offering special Father’s Day deals that will disappear after the big day in June. My favorite deals are at Brad’s Car Wash on the Southside, but you’ll find other great saving options, too, Crew Carwash gift cards can be purchased for under face value (depending on availability) at Sam’s Club and Costco and run their own deal on Washbooks online and in store. I’ve tried to use the Gift Cards to buy Washbooks in the past, but they wouldn’t let me (darn). You’ll also find deals at Kopetsky, Prime Car Wash, and more. No matter where you go, be sure to take advantage of FREE rewards programs if the car wash has one. That way, dad can build points toward a free wash in the future.
Gift Card Deals
Father’s Day marks the close of many gift card deals popular restaurants offer during Mother’s Day/Father’s Day/Graduation season. Be sure if you’re going to take advantage of these deals that you get out there and make your purchases before the end of the week. I’m a big fan of buying gift cards under face value at Sam’s Club or Costco any time of the year. Other popular offerings include:
- Bonefish Grill
- Carraba’s
- The Cheesecake Factory
- Cracker Barrel
- Chili’s
- Grubhub
- Red Lobster
- Metro Diner
Subscription
Does your dad already have everything he needs and more? You may want to consider a digital subscription this year.
For the music lover, SiriusXM is offering a $5/month for 12 months deal right now which includes a free upgrade to the Platinum Plan and a free Echo Dot. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Peacock, or CBS All Access might be a great fit and all vary in costs starting at as little as $4.99. You may consider a workout subscription or a magazine subscription (many are so affordable on Amazon) depending on dad’s passion.
Free Printable Coupon Booklets
Print out a special coupon booklet for your dad. Featuring special perks just for him, you can print yours at home and then assemble it for a quick and easy gift. Pinterest has lots of great options.
Clean Something Up
The garage, the barn, the backyard, a closet, a cabinet – there’s a mess somewhere that needs cleaned up. Spend some time scrubbing down and organizing a space. Ask dad first which place he’d like straightened and any preferences. Then let the fun begin!
Build Something
If your dad likes being handy, you might consider a few tools this year and building things together. Here are a few fantastic Amazon finds:
- Magnetic Tool Cuff for less than $7
- Digital Tape Measure for less than $36
- Energizer LED Tactical Flashlight for less than $10
- BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX Cordless Drill for less than $60
I also love these Kids’ Workshop kits from Home Depot. Most are less than $10.
Play a Game
Does your dad have a favorite sport or game? Today is the perfect day to play. Whether it’s a Mario Kart tournament or a game of pick up ball in the driveway, spend some quality time doing something he loves. Many of dad’s favorite games only cost you time.
If you’re able, you could purchase something that supports his favorite way to play. Check with local golf courses for Father’s Day specials. Or, order a board game from Amazon – all of these are under $25 (most are under $15).
No matter how you choose to honor your dad, you don’t have to spend a ton of money. A little bit of thought and work put in ahead of time will go a long way. In fact, writing a letter or making a phone call to say how much you care never costs anything but time and means more than the most extravagant gift.
