It’s a day when I’d really rather than nap than declutter anything. But I’m trucking forward regardless. And for me, this one shouldn’t take too long. If you want to go for the gusto, rather than just getting the minimal done, consider expanding the decluttering process to your entire family instead of just doing your own project.
*NOTE* Right after I typed these words, I ended up taking our youngest daughter to two immediate cares and from there they transferred us to the Children’s Hospital ER. Life is never what you plan, right? It was a good reminder that this challenge is designed to help you continue the process of organizing your finances (and life) while life is going on. So I apologize for the delay.
The good news is what we thought might be appendicitis ended up being what we think was a food allergy issue. She’s back in school today feeling much better. Thank you for your prayers and encouragement.

Now, on to the challenge!
Day 13: Declutter Your Shoes
Whether they pile in the hallway, scatter on the bottom of the closet floor, or find their way to a rack and remain neatly in line, you probably have more shoes than you need. Let’s clean up the heels and boots, the flip flops and the sneaks today.
Why It Matters:
Investing in good shoes matters. In fact, I once heard it said that anything underneath you needs to be quality – shoes, mattresses, and tires specifically. Well-made shoes prevent you from pain. Your feet are indispensable. When you wear poor shoes or worn out shoes, you risk injury and general malaise. You could end up at the doctor, in physical therapy, and buying pricey inserts if you don’t take good care of your feet.
Now, before you run out on a shoe shopping spree, take a beat. You need to clean through the shoes you already have. You need to donate shoes you won’t wear and those that are worn out. Keeping your space neat and clean cuts down on annoyances AND I’m guessing you may find a pair or two you’ve forgotten about, too. Let’s get busy decluttering your shoes.
How to Do It:
- Gather all the shoes you own. If you keep shoes in more than one place in the house, bring them to a central location.
- Find at least 2-3 pairs you no longer wear or that are worn out.
- Donate gently used shoes. I LOVE that DSW now gives you VIP points for donating your shoes in store to Soles for Souls.
- Organize your shoes according to use. I don’t need my flip flops right now because SNOW everywhere.
- When you’re finished, take a photo and post it to the challenge post in the Financial Decluttering Group. We’ll celebrate your victory. And/or post on Instagram with the #FinancialDecluttering Hashtag.
- You’ll get bonus points and virtual fist bumps for interesting discoveries.
How to Keep It That Way:
Be smart about the shoes you purchase. As a general rule, I purchase the same shoes over and over again. So once I find a pair that treats my feet right, I replace them with an identical pair. Knowing what will work is important. For athletic shoes, you also may want to consider going to a running store to have your gait evaluated, too. Replacing your shoes after you’ve worked out or walked out a lot is important, too!
A Few More Thoughts:
I can’t wait to see all we achieve together this month. I’ll continue sharing my own journey in the Financial Decluttering Facebook Group and via e-mails. Be sure you subscribe for both.
Post a photo of your shoe victories and tips in the comments! I want to see what sorts of systems you use to organize.
