At the beginning of the summer, I was blessed with the opportunity to see the movie The Song which is a modern retelling of the life of Solomon. I’ll be the first to admit that until Moms’ Night Out, I haven’t been the biggest fan of faith based films (although I do love me my Veggie Tales, too). Oftentimes, they fall flat in the artistry department and portray followers of Jesus as one dimensional who all end up with happy endings. We all know life is much more complicated than that when people are involved. We all have struggles and sometimes life just isn’t pretty.
The Song draws heavily upon two of my favorite (and underplayed) books of the Bible The Song of Solomon (or Song of Songs) and Ecclesiastes (which I could read over and over again and still find some new element of beauty). The characters are complicated and while there is resolution, there was a haunting sense of the damage we can do to our relationships with people and God. There are beautiful vistas and words of truth spoken. While it’s a faith based film, it’s not one for younger kids and I’d only watch it with teens if you have a specific plan to discuss the themes immediately after you view it. The movie releases this week on Thursday the 25th.
Right now, thanks to Noisetrade, you can download four of the songs from the film for FREE. They’ll mean a lot more once you’ve seen the movie but they’re still great songs on their own. FREE music? I’m sold. Check out The Song Soundtrack & download your free music friends!
