Catch me tomorrow morning on WTHR Weekend Sunrise at 7:45 AM! Here’s a sneak peek of some of the money saving tips I’ll share.
Today is Easter. And if you haven’t done your shopping yet, let’s be frank. You’re in a bit of a pinch. But here are some simple and frugal ideas to keep you from hopping down the crazy bunny trail.
1) Skip the Grass. I know you might have a warm nostalgic feeling about that plasticky pastel ball of mess but time to face facts, you’re purchasing something with the express purpose of throwing it away almost immediately {if you can pick it out of your carpet, that is}. Instead, consider something you already have in the house – tissue paper? rumpled scrapbook paper? even the funny pages? – or even better, buy something that has long term purposes. My friend Lady Heather suggests a beach towel which is fabulous! Or you could choose a spring t-shirt.
2) Be Sure Your Store is Actually Open. Since today is a holiday, many stores will be closed or have holiday hours. Do yourself a favor and call ahead. You don’t want to arrive to find the doors closed.
3) Avoid the Dollar Section in Filling Your Baskets. I think most people find this ironic but I’m not a big fan of the dollar store or section for toys and gifts. Most {I realize not all but most} of the items are next month’s trash bag fodder. Spend a couple more bucks on something that will last rather than purchasing something that will merely break and be pitched. We love outdoor toys {jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, etc.} and faith based reads to celebrate Easter with the Princesses.
4) Hit the Sales – Tomorrow. It probably won’t feel nearly as festive on Monday but the items you *need* today will ALL cost less tomorrow. You can either enjoy the items a day late or save them for next year. What am I looking for? I’m so glad you asked!
- Baskets that will last. I purchased metal baskets for the Princesses YEARS ago and am still using them every single year rather than purchasing something that might end up in the trash.
- CANDY. Yep it tastes the same every year no matter what day in March or April.
- Dresses & Dress Items. So cute, but half the price {or more} the day after. If you’ve got an upcoming flower girl gig, the next couple of weeks will be a GREAT opportunity to pick up something poofy on the cheap.
5) Keep Your Meal Simple. Too many side dishes, desserts, and extras can really bust the budget. Either encourage family members to each “pitch-in” an item or make a simple meal plan before you head to the grocery store. It’s very easy to get overwhelmed with all of the choices and go overboard. Your wallet and waistline will both thank you. Think a main dish, a vegetable, a fruit, a bread, and a dessert.
As a side note, church is a great FREE place to celebrate the Easter Season. 😉 I dig Stones Crossing Church {and you can even watch online if you’re not able to make it out and about.
