What Do You Do Wednesday? Teacher Christmas Gifts or What Your Teacher Doesn’t Want

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

December 15, 2010 By Cherie Lowe

We all love to show those that we appreciate how much they mean to us at Christmastime.  At a bare minimum, we like to love on the Princesses’ teachers.  But picking out a gift for a teacher can be difficult and bust your budget if you’re not careful.  The Queen Mum is an educator and she’s received a long line of Apple themed gifts, from necklaces to picture frames and more.  Lots of lotions and homemade goods have found their way across her desk over the years.  Yesterday, I asked the Money Saving Lords and Ladies in the Court of the Queen of Free on Facebook about gifts for teachers.  Money Saving Lords and Ladies who are also teachers chimed in with their favorite and oddest gifts received over the years.  Here are a few of the suggestions I thought were particularly helpful.

  • Lady Suellen and Lady Teri (who I like to call Aunt Teri) chimed in that items for the classrooms (or better yet gift cards for places like United Art and Education) that teachers normally purchase from their own pocket are thoughtful and save them money in the long run.
  • A resounding response of gift cards filled the comments.  This made me feel greatly at ease since our go-to teacher gift is (avert your eyes if you’re reading Mrs. Sluder) a Target Gift Card.  I figure there are a variety of items that the teacher can purchase – from the practical to the mundane and even Starbucks at our Target – and they get exactly what they want.  I loved that Lady Ginger suggested a gift card for gasoline.  Great idea!  We stick to $5-$10 because that’s what our budget allows for (keep in mind we spend very little at Christmas right now while we’re working on becoming completely debt free); however, give as you feel led.
  • Handmade items with meaning were also ranked among our teachery friends.  Messages from students and heart felt words of thanks were much more meaningful than the actual items, however.
What don’t teachers want?  Ties.  Leopard Print Silky Pajamas.  And my guess is any item with an apple on it, no matter how cute!  I loved these practical end of the year Teacher gifts posted by Lady Jackie on her blog.  I think I could take on one of these ideas even though I don’t have a crafty bone in my body.  🙂  SPOILER: Lady Jackie will be posting more creative and inexpensive teacher gift items tomorrow on her blog.
What about you?  If you’re a teacher, share your favorite gift received.  If you’re a parent, share what you love to give those who tend to your sweet Princes and Princesses.
