I love Freedom Fridays. I have another awesome story to share with you today. Be encouraged in your own journey as you read this tale of Freedom in Progress!
Hey everybody. So glad you stopped by today. Freedom Friday is when I bi-weekly let you in on how we’re doing with our pursuit of paying off debt. It’s also when many of you have e-mailed me with your story (with either “Freedom in Progress” or “Freedom Achieved” in the subject line) so I can share your story to encourage others, too.
My sweet hubby and I grew up in homes where money was not talked about, so when we got married 19 yrs ago we were pretty clueless. We didn’t have savings or an emergency fund, let alone a budget. (A budget, what’s that?) So when something unexpected came up we’d put it on hubby’s credit card. One credit card turned into more credit cards…
Fast forward about 16 years and about $70K in credit card debt…YIKES!! We were really depressed about our money situation. One of hubby’s co-workers gave him a book by Dave Ramsey called The Total Money Makeover. I read it in one night. I simply couldn’t put it down. Everything he said made total sense! Then hubby read it and we were determined to get out of our hole. We cut up all the credit cards and vowed to never incur any more debt. Three years later we have kept our promise and are doing the debt snowball. So far we’ve paid off $29K and have $39K left. It looks like we’ll be debt free in about 2 yrs. It seems far off, but we’ve already been at it for 3 yrs. It’s so fun to see the bills balances shrinking. When we first started it seemed as though we weren’t making any progress, but as one bill gets paid we take that payment amount and add it to the next lowest balance payment. That’s when the snowball starts moving faster and faster. We started with 19 credit cards. We’ve paid off 6 of them!
We can see the light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not a train coming. It’s FREEDOM!
How awesome is that?!!?! Congrats Lady Heather in your pursuit of true Freedom. You guys rock. Thanks for sharing your story with us. I’m guessing you might even make it to your goal even sooner with that sort of attitude. Keep on slaying those debt dragons. You have already and can continue to do it!
Don’t forget that I want to hear from you and give you a chance to share your story, too! E-mail me with either “Freedom in Progress” or “Freedom Achieved” in the subject line. We’re better, stronger, and more focused together. Join the fray and tell your debt slaying tale.
