Three Things Thursday: Back to School Style

Tips like these helped us pay off $127K in debt. You can read our story in Slaying the Debt Dragon: How One Family Conquered Their Money Monster and Found an Inspired Happily Ever After.

July 30, 2009 By Cherie Lowe

So I’ve already mentioned how much I love the Back to School Season.  The freshly sharpened pencils,  the neatly pressed kids on the first day of school (Moms do that because they realize it won’t happen again all year long.  More than likely every other day of the year I don’t even care if the kid has stains on her shirt as long as it’s clean.), and the smell of a clean classroom.  I went to an elementary school built in 1910.  So for me Back to School smells like freshly waxed wooden floors, industrial cleaner, and a new coat of paint.

Just for fun today I thought it would be fun to share three of our favorite Back to School Supplies.

1) Notebooks.  This one is really more for the King than it is for me.  He cannot resist a good sale on notebooks and throughout the year won’t spend more the a dime on one because he knows he can score them for that little during the month of August.  I’ve finally got him to quit buying filler paper cheap (basically because we gave a ton away one year from one of his shopping sprees) but notebooks remain a staple during the back to school season.  I’m talking about the 70 page theme books (college or wide ruled) that you can buy in a multi-pack.  And we actually do use them throughout the year.  Imagine his sheer joy when I called yesterday to let him know that Meijer has them on sale for 5 cents/notebook right now (Limit 30!).  I have a feeling he’s going to make a stop on his way to work this morning.  He also loves cheap folders but it’s 3 Things Thursday not 4.

2) Pink Pearl Erasers.  If you’ve ever tried to buy these outside of the Back to School sales, you know that they’re ridiculously overpriced during the year.  The Eldest Princess insists on the Pink Pearl brand for some reason and I’m ok with that.  Everybody’s got their thing.  Apparently their motto claims they’re an “American Tradition” which makes sense since (like how I did that?) I couldn’t name another eraser brand/model out there.

3) Elmer’s Glue.  For me, it’s gotta be Elmer’s.  I don’t know why, but nothing smells or works like Elmer’s.  I’m really resisting the urge postulating why their mascot is a cow and not a horse (Stuff like that has gotta come from somewhere, you know?  Perhaps the owner had a beloved cow named Elmer?  Stranger things have happened.).  I especially love the itty bitty bottles.  They’re so cute.  Now comes the true confession time . . . Lords and Ladies, I was a glue eater.  I can’t believe I just disclosed that on the internet.  Paste was disgusting (Hey, I tried it but I didn’t inhale ok?) but for some reason I really liked the taste of glue.  Now I wasn’t one of those kids who sat and drank down the entire bottle (*ahem* can we say gluttons?).  However, I was known to sneak a swig when no one was watching.  I haven’t touched the stuff in years just in case you’re worried about my sobriety level.  While I was researching Elmer’s I found they have lots of great free crafty stuff on their site and a recycling program where schools can win prizes and teachers get free lesson plans.  Go here.  I’m going to go cower in shame for a little while until I feel more confident about my confession.

What about you?  What are your favorite three school supplies to stock up on this time of the year?

I LOVE Post-It notes. I have to ration how many pads I grab from our office supply room, because I’ll go through them too quickly.

Other than that, we always seem to be out of folders & binders when we need them.
